That’s it for Ruben Amorim’s first move to Manchester United.

This summer, Manchester United backed Erik ten Hag in the transfer window. Next year, they will have to do the same for Ruben Amorim, who will be their new head coach.

The first 15 games of the season for Manchester United have shown that they have trouble getting goals, and Ruben Amorim’s last home game as manager of Sporting has made the answer very clear.

Tuesday night, Viktor Gyokeres scored three goals as Manchester City lost 4-1 in Lisbon at the Estádio Jose Alvalade. Pep Guardiola’s team was to blame. That’s the same amount of goals Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have scored in 25 games this season together.

With that hat-trick, Gyokeres has scored 23 goals in 17 games this season, which is only three less than United have scored in all categories. If you take out the local cups, the Sporting striker has six more league and European goals than the Reds.

Even though Liga Portugal isn’t always seen as competitive, the fact that Gyokeres scored five goals in four Champions League games and United scored five goals in three Europa League games shows how hard it is for them to score. There are already rumors that Zirkzee will go back to Italy in the new year. United needed a shooter so they signed the 23-year-old this summer.

Gyokeres is the clear choice because he is Europe’s best goal maker right now. Amorim said that United won’t sign any Sporting players during the winter transfer window, but he didn’t say that they wouldn’t do that next summer either.

He thinks the striker will leave Lisbon at that point. “Viktor has to stay until the end of the season, and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else,” he said after the game.

In January, it was never likely that United would pay Sporting enough to let them sell their scorer. There may be a delay in the first deal after Amorim arrives, but it looks like it will be worth it for Gyokeres to wait.
