Tyler Onyango, a young player for Everton, was praised for a great performance after doing really well in training. The 21-year-old is on loan at Stockport County right now, where he is competing for playing time on a League One team that is having a tough time.

In Stockport’s 4-1 win over Reading on Tuesday night, he started his first game since September. He filled in at center back and then set up Will Collar for the game’s first goal by crashing forward.

It was the best of his seven league games so far, and boss Dave Challinor said it summed up a lot of good work he had done in training.

Challinor talked about the physical and mental traits that have caught his attention since the summer transfer: “For me, Tyler would have been man of the match [it was instead awarded to teammate Lewis Bate], not just because of his performance, dealing with their threats, his recovery pace, his one-on-one defending was outstanding, and he has stepped in. When someone of his physicality steps in, it’s obvious and hard to stop.” He has had to wait his turn, but he has done really well in training.

Onyango has never lost at Stockport, who were just promoted and are currently in 10th place in the league. They have only lost two games this season and are only five points behind second place. This is the midfielder’s third loan stay, after time at Forest Green Rovers and Burton Albion. He is being asked to play center back during this one. During the pre-season matches for the Everton first team, he played that role for a while under Sean Dyche.

Challinor also said, “He’s learning a stance on the job in League One football, which can be hard at times.” In his last game, four hours against Barnsley were hard for him.

“Now I hope that’s what makes him who he is, and he and our fans can see what kind of player he is and what a good player he is.” To go over this one more time, it’s about consistency—putting in performances like that week after week. If he can do that, he has a real chance in a new role for him.
