Tadej Pogačar’s new deal says he will get €50 million over six years and has a €200 million buyout clause.
The Slovenian says, “The Tour will be central to my season in 2025.” He then lists his new season goals.
In the next six years, Tadej Pogačar will make €50 million, making him by far the highest-paid cyclist in the world. With a €200 million buyout option, other teams will not be able to get him to leave UAE Team Emirates.
Tuesday, La Gazzetta dello Sport published information about Pogačar’s new contract. According to Cyclingnews, the final salary could be even higher because of bonuses and other parts of the deal.
Pogaëar was already making around €6 million a year, but he agreed to a new deal after winning the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France, and the world title in 2024.
Pogačar will get €8 million a year from the new deal, plus extra money for big wins. Remco Evenepoel is said to be making close to €5 million a season with his new deal with Soudal-QuickStep. Jonas Vingegaard is also making about the same amount as boss at Visma-Lease a Bike.
When the new deal was announced, PogaÍar said, “This team has been my home for the last five years, and I really can’t imagine myself anywhere else.”
“Look forward to the future with great joy.” I want to fight for wins, and this team gives me the best chance to do that.
This new deal will last until Pogaëar turns 32 years old in 2030. This is probably going to be his last deal. The new buyout clause of €200 million, which is double the old buyout clause, makes it almost impossible for rival teams to sign Pogačar. The only thing that might make Pogačar leave is a disagreement and a court case.
Le Gazzetta dello Sport quoted UAE Team Emirates boss Mauro Gianetti as saying, “Tadej is not on the market.”
He feels like he belongs in this country and doesn’t want to leave. More important than the races he wins is what he does for Abu Dhabi. That makes Pogačar proud; he gets people excited about riding, and the royal family gets along great with him.
“Bike riding is our national sport.” There will be more bike paths built, and the new track will be ready by the end of 2025. The Road World Championships will be held in Abu Dhabi in 2028, and the Track World Championships will be held there in 2029.
Following a successful 2024 season, Pogačar took a relaxing vacation in Seychelles with his partner, another professional rider named Urška Žigart.
It took him 58 days to race and win 25 times. He won the world title in Zurich, making him the third cyclist to complete the triple crown and the first since Marco Pantani to win both the Giro and the Tour.
“The season was great. “I never thought I would be here,” Pogačar said at the eSports World Championships in Abu Dhabi not long ago. No changes will be made as long as I’m having fun. I like riding my bike that way because I want to enjoy it. If you don’t love it, there’s no reason to do it.
“As I leave my mark on the sport, I like to test myself and get better. Every race and every minute is fun for me.
Some people think that PogaÍar’s dominance in the sport is making it boring to watch because he often wins races with long-distance charges and solo breakaways. It was the same reason he said he hadn’t watched the races he had won.
“Because I don’t know how much fun it is to watch a rider ride 50 km by themselves, I’ve only seen highlights,” he joked to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Even though PogaÍar and UAE Team Emirates haven’t said what their goals are for 2025 yet, it looks like they want to win a fourth Tour de France.
The Tour will be very important to me in 2025, and I’m sure I’ll be competing against Jonas Vingegaard. He’s a big rival of mine, and I’m sure he’ll be better than ever,” Pogačar said, listing some of his other likely 2025 goals. “There’ll be Milan-San Remo, something on the cobbles and the Worlds in Africa.”
Gianetti made it clear that Pogaëar’s 2025 season will be carefully managed, and that another Grand Tour double is likely to be his goal.
“He will not start his season early; he also needs time to rest and get better,” the boss of the Swiss team said.
His next Grand Tour double could include the Giro or the Vuelta in addition to the Tour. He’s not going to do Paris-Roubaix because we can’t always count on him to be a star.
