Stefan Borson reveals how Manchester City are gearing up for life after current boss Pep Guardiola
Manchester City’s stance on the Premier League’s associated party transactions (APT) rules is unexpected in light of their recent success.
Stefan Borson, a former financial counsel for Manchester City, has exclusively disclosed to Football Insider that the English champions are likely considering the matter in a more comprehensive manner and are not limited to Pep Guardiola’s tenure at the club.
Man City is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the Premier League regarding the APT regulations, asserting that the regulations are “illegal.”
The amount that clubs could spend under the PSR rules would increase if the rules were not in place, as they would be able to consent to sponsorship deals at any level without any challenge.
Last season, Manchester City achieved a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title by narrowly defeating Arsenal to the trophy.
Borson posited that clubs at the top would typically prefer to maintain regulation in order to prevent other teams from contesting their dominance.
He stated to Football Insider, “When you have secured a position at the top, you typically strive to construct a moat that is as expansive as possible to prevent other clubs from mounting a challenge.”
“I suppose in that context, it is slightly surprising that City are one of the clubs advocating for a lack of regulation on a strong basis, despite being at the top of the table.”Nevertheless, I believe they are considering the future beyond Pep Guardiola and are considering a more comprehensive approach to the matter.
“All of the clubs are permitted to sit around the table and establish their own positions.”
“It is the responsibility of the league’s governance to establish a set of equitable rules.”
