Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to deliberate on whether to dismiss Erik ten Hag and appoint a replacement as manager of Manchester United, or to support the Dutchman for an additional season in command.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has granted a stay of execution to Erik ten Hag, while the Manchester United manager continues to contemplate dismissal.

It was widely anticipated that United manager Ten Hag would be replaced this summer following the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth. However, the FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City over the weekend, which guaranteed a berth in the Europa League for the following season, has given Ratcliffe food for thought.

Ratcliffe is implementing a significant organizational restructuring at United, which has entailed the recruitment of a fresh chief executive, sporting director, and technical director, as well as a drastic reduction in the club’s workforce. The petrochemicals billionaire is confident in his ability to turn around United after acquiring sporting control for 27.7% of the club in a £1.3 billion transaction, but Ten Hag’s future is no longer as clear-cut as it once appeared.

Ten Hag, who is presently on vacation, might have anticipated the worst, given that Ratcliffe and his INEOS team, comprised of United’s interim CEO Jean-Claude Blanc and Sir Dave Brailsford, were undertaking a season-ending evaluation. The Telegraph, however, reports that they are exercising caution regarding the decision and are averse to hastening to a hasty conclusion that they may come to regret.

The conclusion of the season has provided the INEOS brain trust with some time to reflect after consulting with representatives of potential Ten Hag replacements. Ratcliffe’s remarks following the completion of the acquisition of United in February provided an elucidation of the decision-making methodology employed by INEOS.

“In a sense, we must be cautious not to rush into it,” he stated. “Rather than walking to the correct solution, it is preferable not to run to it.”

Ten Hag has one year remaining on his contract and has repeatedly attributed United’s dismal league performance to his squad’s injury count. Due to the FA Cup victory and Europa League qualification, United will be obligated to pay additional compensation to the Dutchman and his staff should they terminate him.

After winning at Wembley, the 54-year-old sent a defiant message: “I have done this my entire career: If they don’t want me anymore, I go elsewhere and win trophies.” That victory seems to have altered the team’s perception, as the goals scored by Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, both of whom are 19 years old, indicated a potentially promising future.

In recent weeks, INEOS has engaged in discussions with the representatives of Thomas Frank, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi, Gareth Southgate, and Kieran McKenna in preparation for a life without Ten Hag, regardless of whether they ultimately decide to implement the move. McKenna has subsequently withdrawn from consideration by entrusting his future to Ipswich, and it is believed that Southgate is the preferred candidate.
