Dallas CowBoys
Should we blindly trust the cowboys? Most likely not.
Recently, the Cowboys had a bye week. It was the first time I can remember that I was really happy that they didn’t have a game.
In the past, I’ve liked it when the Cowboys had a bye week because it gave my co-host Donovan Lewis and me a break from doing post-game radio work on The Ticket. I like being able to pay attention to the many other games that other teams are playing. I was happy this time because it meant I didn’t have to watch the Cowboys play.
After what happened with the Detroit Lions a few weeks ago and the following week with team owner Jerry Jones, as well as the media circus that followed in which he seemed to threaten the jobs of radio hosts who dared to question his decisions, I didn’t want to risk another slaughter and even more frustration.
As the Dallas Cowboys get ready to play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night, there are two facts that Dallas and its fans need to face. The Cowboys are 3–3 and 1.5 games behind the team in first place in the division. That sports team is.500. The other truth is that this.500 team feels like the worst in league history, in my opinion.
A group that has lost three games in a row and is 42 points behind. That is exactly what you read. Lower 42. The only teams in the NFC with worse point differentials are the disastrous 1–6 Carolina Panthers and the 2–5 New York Giants. Not surprisingly, the Cowboys don’t have a bad record. Any god you believe in, thank Carolina for letting in 34.7 points per game. In a league where teams give up 28 points per game, Dallas would be the best at not giving up those points.
Do not move yet! Don’t know? It’s been a while since the Cowboys’ defense has been strong.
Due to injuries, star edge rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence were unable to play in two games for Dallas. It’s not their fault that they lost Marshawn Kneeland, a possible first-round pick, and Sam Williams got hurt in training camp. They keep giving reasons. Pro Bowl CB DaRon Bland hasn’t played all season, and Eric Kendricks, who was signed as a free agent, had to miss some games.
Really though, the idea that it is hard to beat when you are missing a lot of important defense parts is partly true. Your defense will have a hard time now that you’ve lost two of your best players. I realize what you mean.
What about the attack that isn’t working well, though?
The Cowboys’ attack has Dak Prescott, the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, and CeeDee Lamb, the second-highest-paid player in the NFL right now who is not a quarterback. They picked three players in the first round for their offensive line. Their head coach won the Super Bowl and is an expert in attack. He calls the plays for the offense. Given that the defense has been hurt and gives up 28 points per game, the offense must be keeping the team alive, right?
A loud “Hell no!” would be necessary. With only 3.5 yards per carry, Dallas is last in the NFL. They also have the fewest running yards per game, with 77.
The fewest yards allowed per game are by three teams, and none of the other teams are better than 82. They score 21 points per game, which is 20th in the NFL. This is mostly because they make more field goals than any other team in the NFL. In six games, Dallas has only scored 11 scores. You might be surprised to learn that only four teams have a worse record than them (8-17).
By saying all of this, I want to say that you are right if you think that the results don’t match up with what you saw on the field. The only good thing about this team is that, according to the numbers, they should be 2–4 or 1–5, but they have a 3–3 record instead.
Why does it seem like there is no hope?
I’m like the Cowboys when I was in high school math. It was important for me to have a private coach, go to the tutoring my teacher offered, and maybe even a little luck with multiple choice questions. I did just well enough on a simple 10-question test to pass. That was fine until the big tests came around and asked for more thorough answers to harder questions. I just couldn’t get past that. There were times when those tests really shocked me. That’s what the Cowboys make me think of.
In Week 1, the Cowboys were able to easily pass that little test that the weak Cleveland Browns gave them. The tougher test came against the Baltimore Ravens, who won the AFC title last year and have Lamar Jackson, who is the current league MVP. The Cowboys blew that test out of the water. They were down 28–6 in the fourth quarter but found a way to make it look a lot tighter than it really was.
We felt better about ourselves before the big test against Detroit after two small tests in New York and Pittsburgh. What did happen? In every way, an epic fail. It was the worst house fire since Jones became owner in 1989. A terrible loss that made the Lions start making fun of Dallas by using offensive linemen as targets on several plays.
So, let’s talk about the San Francisco 49ers this week. This is either a quiz or a test, since the 49ers’ squad is probably worse than the Cowboys’. They have a 3–4 record and lost badly to Kansas City recently.
Last year, the Cowboys were going to San Francisco after beating the New England Patriots 38–3. Someone asked Prescott about the 2022 playoff loss to the 49ers. His reply? Honestly, he told reporters, “We’re so far past that, but that’s obvious.” “It’s okay if you just want to annoy me before the weekend.”
As it turned out, the quarterback was so mad that he threw three picks, and the Cowboys lost 42–10. That 49ers team was 4-0, so it wasn’t as bad as their current record. But I don’t think this team will be able to beat a team that beat them on the road last year.
I’ve always been a fan who can enjoy the season’s ups and downs without asking, “What does it matter?” They are going to lose in the playoffs. One person who wants us to lose in the playoffs is me. It would be better than not making it at all. But after seeing this team get beaten three times already this season, it’s hard to keep holding on to the hope that something good will happen every week. And I can’t help but think, “What if we lose badly to San Francisco before playing tough games against Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Houston?”
Now, really? Things could get really bad.
I want to believe that the Cowboys can surprise everyone and beat a hurt 49ers team in San Francisco. Also, the 49ers’ four losses were only by a total of 20 points. These games are a little different from the Cowboys’ three losses by a total of 66 points.
I’d rather not sound so critical when talking about a team I really care about. More than ever, maybe there’s an air of “I’ll believe it when I see it” around this fan group that’s making even the most dedicated Cowboys fans lose faith. When you believe in something without any reason or facts, that’s called blind faith.
If you believe in this team every week, you must have pure blind faith in a crazy Jerry Jones selling us snake oil to solve our problems. Still, I passed math in the end. Faith alone isn’t always enough for us.
