The Grizzlies, led by Ja Morant, are aiming for a return to form after missing the playoffs last year.
Jaren Jackson Jr.’s need for surgery earlier this offseason, shortly after the Grizzlies re-signed him to an extension, was bad news already.
Because Morant came dangerously close to sustaining a major injury on Wednesday, they nearly received worse news.
Video of Morant doing some crazy dunks went viral while he was at an event abroad. In one of the videos, he tried to dunk the ball over his dad, who was standing just outside the paint.
Morant tripped right as he took off, tumbling awkwardly to the ground as he braced himself for the landing. Although he managed to get back up without any injuries, the ungainly fall did cause some concern.
Morant is one of the best dunkers in the NBA, but he hasn’t been as prolific a dunker lately to avoid injuries.
He’s missed a lot of games in recent years, playing nine games in 2023-24 and 50 games in the 2024-25 season.
One reason Morant hasn’t been as dynamic around the rim this season is because he suffered with a shoulder issue last year that sidelined him for nearly the whole season.
Morant played in 50 games for the 2024–25 NBA season, averaging 23.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
