Following his team’s 1-0 win at St. Mary’s, Russell Martin says Everton “threw everything” at Southampton but was ultimately happy with the result. By scoring late, Adam Armstrong gave Southampton their first Premier League win of the season.

Armstrong’s header from Yukinari Sugawara’s cross in the 85th minute was enough to give Southampton the win. Beto, an Everton striker, had a late equaliser overturned by VAR after a long review, which showed that he was offside.

After four straight losses, Southampton’s win takes them off the bottom of the table and will give their chances of staying in the league a much-needed boost after being promoted.

Marvin Martin, the manager of the Saints, said, “It’s a big relief. I’m happy, proud, and thankful with the players, staff, owners, and board.” Things have been hard lately.

“The guys kept going. The way they work and train is great. I love being here, and I want to keep it going for as long as I can.”

“They (Everton) threw everything at us. They’re a strong, good team that play well together and make it hard.” There were some great football games we played today.

Aaron Ramsdale played great in goal for Southampton, beating Everton’s and England’s top custodian Jordan Pickford.

The new player, who came from Arsenal, made a quick low save on Michael Keane from six yards out and then tipped Jesper Lindstrom’s free kick over the bar to keep his team’s clean sheet.

“He was massive and I’m surprised he’s here still,” said Martin.

“We were able to get him, and I’m thankful that everyone helped us do it.” It took a long time to get him to come, but he did. I hope he’s learning as much from it as we are, because he has a huge character. He trains right, has a good voice, and adds worth.

“On the pitch, the save from the one from Michael Keane is a top save, he gives us moments like that and that can be the difference.”

In the second half, Jan Bednarek got a yellow card for tripping Everton forward Beto when he was through on goal.

The result was upheld instead of being changed to a red card after a VAR review because the challenge was not thought to have blocked a goal-scoring chance.

Everton manager Sean Dyche said this about what happened: “The most important call in the game went against us.” The sending off, I’m shocked that wasn’t given.

“Beto is in the groove, and he’s cross over.” What worries me is that people who don’t roll around don’t get dealt with.

“Beto is trying to stay on his feet and nothing gets given but just a yellow card, the defender is a long way off.”
