It’s only been one day since Ruben Amorim became head coach of Manchester United, but he’s already been told that firing Ruud van Nistelrooy was the wrong thing to do.

Rio Ferdinand says that by firing Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ruben Amorim could lose the backing of the Manchester United players and fans.

Van Nistelrooy managed four games as interim manager after Erik ten Hag was fired, but on Monday he was told that his skills are no longer needed. When Amorim finished his time at Sporting Lisbon, the former United striker did a good job as manager. His games were won three times and drawn once. However, his time back at the club ended after only a few months.

The coaches that Amorim worked with at Sporting and are now going to be in charge at United arrived in Manchester on Monday. Van Nistelrooy was told of his choice in person, and he is now looking forward to his first game as manager, which is on November 24 away at Ipswich.

While playing for United, Ferdinand teamed up with Van Nistelrooy and has been pleased by how he’s behaved lately. “His audition could not have gone any better, and from what I know about him, there was a thick layer of determination that said, ‘I’m going to put myself in the best position, either to stay at the club in some way or someone is going to say we need you as a manager.'” Prior to the choice being made, he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents, “He looked the part and he produced.”

That was what the players needed. At the moment, there was a lot of chaos. The manager’s relationships with some players seemed broken and unfixable, and the fans seemed to have decided that was it. And then the new boss starts. There’s always that bounce, but this didn’t seem like a bounce.

“The players had grown to really like him, and they liked how he kept them up to date on different things—tactically, individually, and as a team. There was a real sense of ‘we want to do well for this guy'”

After that, Owen Hargreaves, a former United defender, said that Amorim should have kept Van Nistelrooy to work with Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford: “They need to learn from one of the best to ever do it.” You don’t have to be the coach’s main role, but you can help these guys learn the little things.

Ferdinand agreed “hugely” and added, “We’ve been waiting here for a manager to get in touch with the players.” We have one now. Why are you going to get rid of him? The boss will be the most difficult and interesting part. He will be the one to decide if he wants to keep Ruud or not.

It’s a tough choice because you have to have a lot of personality, character, and faith in what you do to say, “I don’t care who’s next to me, I can do this.” Figure out if he will add worth or take away from the work.
