Ruben Amorim talks about how Sporting beat Man City before they moved to Manchester United: “Nothing tactical.”
Manchester City lost to Sporting in the Champions League. Ruben Amorim, who will soon be the manager of Manchester United, handled Sporting in his last home game in Lisbon.
In the Champions League, Ruben Amorim says he didn’t change his team’s strategy at halftime, even though his team scored twice in as many minutes to shock Manchester City.
City owned the first half against Sporting and were ahead right away. They tied the game on the break, though, and 20 seconds into the second half, Max Araujo put them ahead. Soon after the game started again, Gyokeres executed a penalty he won, and he scored his third penalty later in the half to make it a hat-trick.
At the beginning of the second half, Sporting blew away City. But Amorim, who will take over at Manchester United next week, said there were no changes to the team’s strategy that led to the two quick goals.
“It was written,” he said after his last home game for Sporting after four great years. “The first half was really tough. We got lucky. From the start of the second half, we scored twice. The place, the weather, everything helped us.
“It was a great night and a good time.” We all deserve this. It was an amazing day four years ago when we were so low.
What did Amorim tell his players at halftime? When asked, he said they should focus on Mateo Kovacic, but he argued that momentum, confidence, and a change in the mood were what made the biggest difference.
“Lucky,” he said once more. “Goals of 2-1 and 3-1 were not clever. It happened so quickly. We changed the pressure a little and made the middle more closed. Let Trincao take care of Kovacic. We get better. Then 3-1, everything pushes us to the end of the game.”
