Demi Stokes, a defender for Newcastle United in the Women’s Championship, stated that it was “logical” to return home to compete.

Newcastle, which was recently promoted, has acquired the 32-year-old from Manchester City, a Women’s Super League team, in one of the most publicised transfers of the summer.

Stokes entered the first squad at the age of 16 after graduating from the academy at Sunderland, Newcastle’s rivals. He subsequently pursued an illustrious career.

She has earned 69 appearances for England and was a member of the squad that emerged victorious at Euro 2022. Stokes achieved over 200 appearances and won the Women’s Super League in 2016, as well as three FA Cups and four League Cups, during her tenure at City.

“I was ecstatic during my meeting with Newcastle’s personnel.” Stokes stated, “It was logical.”

“The journey they have undertaken…” I merely desired to participate in it. I am confident that I can be of significant assistance, regardless of whether it is on or off the pitch.

Stokes was born in Dudley, West Midlands, and relocated to the North East as a youth.

She is among the numerous players from the region who have achieved success on the international stage, including retired champions Jill Scott and Steph Houghton, as well as current Lioness Beth Mead.

Newcastle has joined Sunderland and Durham as the third North East club in England’s second division, having been promoted only 12 months after the players went full-time.

“Newcastle was a club that was highly ambitious.” They desired to exert pressure. Stokes stated, “They discussed their aspirations to qualify for the Champions League timely and to continue to advance.”

“That is an exciting prospect, and I was eager to participate.” Newcastle’s current objectives were comparable to those of City at the time of my initial signing.

“I have nearly visited the location, observed its appearance, and am aware of the aspects that you may wish to modify and contribute to.” There are only minor details.

“Not everyone possesses all the knowledge.” I am still in the process of learning, as is everyone else. It is wonderful that I am still able to make a contribution. Additionally, we have a youthful team. I wished to provide assistance in any capacity that I could.

Stokes has already received numerous accolades; however, she anticipates that representing Newcastle in the forthcoming season will provide her with a “excitement.”

“When you engage in football, you are perpetually seeking the next high, the next buzz.” She continued, “I am confident that I will receive that from the fans and the team.”

“What better way to share that in Newcastle than with my friends and family there.”

Among others, Newcastle have strengthened their squad this summer by signing Northern Ireland’s all-time leading scorer Rachel Furness and Jamaica international Shania Hayles.

Stokes aspires to impart her wealth of experience to the remainder of the squad, having spent nine years in full-time, professional environments at City and England, in conjunction with them.

However, the prospect of performing in front of her family and friends on a weekly basis may be the most thrilling for her.

“It will be really nice for old school friends to come and watch games who haven’t been able to because Manchester is too far,” according to Stokes.

“Many of them are Newcastle supporters and have children.” Everyone at home was exceedingly enthusiastic.

Stokes made history in 2022 by becoming the first athlete at Manchester City to balance professional football with motherhood.

A critical factor in her decision to relocate to the North East was the ability to bring her son Harlen and obtain assistance from Newcastle.

“Newcastle possesses a familial atmosphere, and they were genuinely sympathetic to my circumstances.” Stokes stated, “I believe that is always a pleasant experience.”

“On recovery days, my son is permitted to attend training.” As an increasing number of individuals recognise that it is feasible to fulfil both duties, workplaces will increasingly resemble this.

“With the appropriate assistance, it is feasible to have children.” I do not believe that it is currently in the appropriate position in terms of the support for the women’s game; however, it is about stretching those boundaries and seeking assistance.

“It is novel to all.” I consistently maintain that the more we provide support to women and one another, the more beneficial it will be.
