Basketball
Recently, no other Kentucky basketball team has done what this one is doing in at least 25 years.
In ways that Big Blue Nation hasn’t seen in decades, Kentucky basketball is making history this season. Brandon Ramsey says that the Wildcats have the most balanced offense the school has seen since at least 1995. Five players are averaging over 10 points per game: Otega Oweh (15.7), Lamont Butler (15.1), Jaxson Robinson (12.2), Andrew Carr (10.9), and Amari Williams (10.2). Even the famous title team of 2012, with five players averaging 9.9 points or more per game, couldn’t quite match this level of consistent production across the board.
That the Wildcats have so many players shows how versatile and generous they are. There are many people who can take over the game at any given time, so it’s hard for opponents to plan their strategy around just one or two stars. It’s no surprise that Kentucky scores 91 points per game on average, the most in the country.
Mark Pope, the head coach, has stressed putting the team first, and the achievements speak for themselves. In a new interview, Pope said, “We have the right guys, good guys.” He said, “We’re not perfect, we have so much growing to do,” which means he thinks they can do even better.
For a long time, depth has been an important part of March championship runs. It lets coaches change up the lineup for different games and makes sure that players have fresh legs for tough back-to-back games. Kentucky’s balance also means that no one player has to carry the team. This is very different from recent Wildcats teams, which often depended on one or two star players to do most of the work. The other guys had a hard time picking them up when those guys weren’t hitting.
This team will have to work hard to keep up its high-octane offense and get better at defense as the competition in the SEC and beyond gets tougher. But the Wildcats have a real chance to win their ninth national title if they can keep up this level of depth and consistency in scoring. This team is very scary because they did all of this without really having a crazy night from 3.
Big Blue Nation is getting more and more excited with each win. Finally, March can’t come fast enough with this strong of a team and this powerful of an attack.
