Reason why Chelsea might be penalise by a bigger points deduction than Nottingham Forest FC

There is a very real chance that Chelsea will lose more points next season than Nottingham Forest and Everton.

This is what sports finance expert Stefan Borson, who joined

White and Jordan will talk about the Blues’ spending on Tuesday.

This season, Premier League foes Nottingham Forest and Everton have been docked points, with Forest losing four and Everton losing six. Everton’s points total was recently lowered from 10 to 8.

Both teams were punished for breaking the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), which made them both more likely to be relegated.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in May 2022, Chelsea has spent more than £1 billion on new players.

Premier League teams can’t lose more than £105 million in three years in order to follow PSR.

Borson agrees that Chelsea has a very hard job ahead of them to avoid punishment, given that they failed to qualify for Europe last season and are having a hard time doing so again this season.

He said, “With Mason Mount, there was an assumption because it was said on Manchester United’s website on July 1 that the sale had been put off until this season.”

“That means the £55 million profit came from this season.” It turns out that Mason Mount was bought and sold in 2022 or 2023, which is how they got around the FFP rules.

“That means they’ve now got a £55 million bigger hole this season,” Simon Jordan said.

Borson said, “That’s right.” “Because we also know from the BlueCo accounts that they are currently, from the post-balance sheet events, that they are something like £48million in profit for this year.”

Chelsea may not be out of the woods yet when it comes to PSR, though, and their only option may be to sell academy grads who will only cost them money.

“But of course, this year from an operating perspective, is going to be even worse than last year because they’ve got no Champions League and no Europe at all.” Borson spoke up.

Borson said, “Really, they need to find buyers for Trevoh Chalobah for £20m, Armando Broja for £40m, and Conor Gallagher for £50m.” This is how Chelsea deal with it.

“These kinds of deals have to be made. Also, everything has to be done by June 30. That is made clear in the Forest ruling, as we all know.

“People talk a lot about how tough it is to sell players before June. It was pretty much said by the Premier League that it was impossible.

Because of this, Jordan can only see a sports sanction coming Chelsea’s way.

According to the former chairman of Crystal Palace, “Stefan is basically saying that it is impossible that by December of next year, Chelsea won’t be facing a charge from the Premier League for breaching Financial Fair Play, unless there’s a complete sea change in the rules or a complete re-rowing back from that point of view.”

“If you’re looking at Chelsea’s numbers, unless they’re going to sell somewhere in the region of £200m worth of players, so the players you think they’re least likely to sell, then Chelsea are going to be in the situation Nottingham Forest and Everton have been in this time next year.”

When host Jim White asked if that was fair, Borson went even further and said Chelsea should get a worse punishment than Everton and Forest.

“Yeah. “Well, maybe even worse,” he replied.

“I think the scale of the losses they’re currently forecasting, to me, appear to be vastly in excess of both Everton and Nottingham Forest.”
