Patrick Mahomes hopes to get back on track against a Panthers team that is getting better.
The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the season to the Buffalo Bills. This Sunday, they play the Carolina Panthers, a team that started the season 1-7, and hope to get back on track.
But before their bye week last week, the Panthers picked up speed, winning two games in a row to raise their record to 3-7. Some young Panthers are getting used to first-year head coach Dave Canales. Linebacker Drue Tranquill of the Kansas City Chiefs thinks that Carolina is a team that they should not overlook.
“They have played better in the last two weeks,” Tranquill said. “I think they’re starting to gel, or mesh a little bit.” “You can see those young men getting used to it.” In the off-season, they added some good players to the offensive line. It’s a good group of people, and we’ll need to be on our A’s and B’s.
Their ground game, led by starting running back Chuba Hubbard, has helped the Panthers get back on track. This season, the fourth-year back has been a force, averaging 5.1 yards per run on his way to 818 yards and six touchdowns. Hubbard ran for 153 yards and a score against the New York Giants in Week 10, which was the high point of his season. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised him for his performance.
“So obviously, they have a good running back and a good quarterback [in Bryce Young],” Reid said. “He is great at football right now.” They have a great offensive line, and wide receiver 17 (Xavier Legette) is a great player. That means they’ve been moving the ball very well in the last few games.
Even with these changes, Carolina’s defence is still one of the weakest in the league, especially against the run, where they’ve given up 1,601 yards, which is second most in the NFL. In Week 10, Giants running back Tyrone Tracy got 103 yards on the ground. The week before, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara ripped the Panthers’ defence apart for 215 yards from scrimmage.
A strong run attack could be just what Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs to get back on track after throwing two interceptions last week against Buffalo. By relying on the running game, Kansas City could make things easier for its quarterback by creating more manageable passing chances. This would also make it possible for big plays to get the offence going.
Mahomes recognises that the Panthers have been getting better lately, but he sees this game as a great chance for the Chiefs to get back on track and get a much-needed bounce-back win.
“They have a lot of good players on defence,” Mahomes said of the Panthers. You may have seen that in the past few weeks. They work hard, and as the season goes on, they get better at football.
“Going to play them there will be a true test for us.” They have two wins and a bye in a row, so they will be hungry. We will have a great chance to go out there and try to find a way to win.
