Liverpool
One of the things that FSG is doing in their pursuit of Michael Edwards for Liverpool is something that they do not normally do
This week’s Blood Red piece talks about FSG’s ongoing efforts to get Michael Edwards back in charge of Liverpool.
Few people knew much about Michael Edwards during his time at Liverpool, but he has been the subject of a lot of column inches lately.
While he was in charge of football for the Reds from 2016 to 2022, the former sports director became known as one of the best in Europe. But a lot of that respect came from how well he did on the field and how the media reported on his behavior off of it.
As the mysterious Edwarrds became more mysterious and mysterious, so did his reputation. He became almost mythical in the eyes of Liverpool fans, who were enjoying the fruits of his labor as Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and others led the team to so many trophies that they were proudly called “the champions of everything” in 2020.
Aside from an open letter posted on the club website in 2021 in which he announced his departure at the end of the season, not much was known about Edwards. He has avoided the media spotlight and preferred to work away from it, which is helped by Klopp’s huge personality, which makes him so interesting.
In order to stay up to date on the latest news in the football industry, Edwards and his data team would go to the occasional football conference. But fans believed the legend of the man more than the facts, and his and Liverpool’s results clearly spoke for themselves.
Edwards is back on the radar for Liverpool, though, almost two years after leaving. Fenway Sports Group wants to bring him back to the club in the post-Klopp era.
A sporting director is needed right away to start or continue the search for Klopp’s replacement. FSG clearly likes the idea of having Edwards’ steady hand lead the process during this time of uncertainty as they get ready for the next phase of their control starting in the summer.
That makes sense from the owners’ point of view, but what might be strange is how the rumors have kept going strong since Klopp told everyone about his choice five weeks ago. It’s not in the expertise of either FSG or Edwards to leave this kind of speculation alone. Liverpool became known as one of the smoothest teams to work with because of how many deals and decisions they made while they were together, especially during the transfer window. That is, the more people talk about a surprise return, the more interesting it becomes.
There are rumors that the product of the University of Sheffield would want even more control and power than he had at Anfield during his last job. This was thought to have been lessened by the growing “cult of Klopp” because of how successful and popular he was as manager. Also very right, by the way.
Klopp has been in charge of too many aspects of the club for too long, so any new sports director would have more work to do after Klopp leaves. There’s a reason he’s said that his lack of energy was the main reason for his quick and shocking choice.
