Ja Morant was as surprised as the rest of the NBA community when he heard last month that the Orlando Magic had acquired Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in a trade that also included Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony (who allegedly will join the Milwaukee Bucks following a buyout), and a number of future draft choices.
While Morant does regret losing Bane as a teammate, he sees this deal as beneficial for both the Grizzlies and the Magic in the long run. Morant told Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, “I was shocked, personally.” the news broke. A message was sent to me by Des.
Since it was plastered all over the web, I honestly believed the (crap) was not real.
“It’s best for both sides. Des is going to a very talented Orlando team. I feel like he’s the piece that they’ve been missing,” he added.

The Memphis Grizzlies have been one of the busiest teams this offseason, and Ja Morant likes their newest additions. Besides acquiring Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the team also brought in Ty Jeromeand Jock Landale while re-signing Santi Aldama, Jaren Jackson Jr. , and Cam Spencer to new multi-year contracts.
According to Morant, Caldwell-Pope’s presence as a vet is immensely beneficial to the team. His defensive duties are well-known. Our young men who aspire to be that guy now have an ideal mentor in the form of this vet.
