Memphis Mourns: Zach Randolph Shares Heartfelt Message After Legend’s Passing

In 2001, the Memphis Grizzlies NBA franchise relocated from Vancouver to Memphis.

In 2004, the Grizzlies and the Memphis Tigers both called FedExForum home. Fred Smith, whose company’s namesake played in the Grizzlies’ arena, passed away at the age of 80 on Sunday, June 22.

His passing has sparked discussions about renaming the Memphis International Airport after him.

Smith’s passing brought a strong, heartfelt take from former Grizzlies star Zach Randolph, who took to his Instagram account to share his thoughts on Smith’s death and what he meant to the Memphis community.

“To my friend Richard Smith, and the entire Smith Family, I extend my deepest condolences,” Randolph wrote on IG.

“Fred Smith undoubtedly embodied what it means to be a blue collar guy, from a blue collar town. He personified grit and grind, coming from humble beginnings and working to create the company we all know and love today FedEx.

Mr. Smith, I thank you for all that you gave to our home, Memphis. I personally cannot wait to fly in and out of what I hope will soon be the Frederick W. Smith International Airport,” Randolph added, sharing a photo that had fans reacting.

Well said Bo!” one fan said.

“Well said ZBo,’ another added in reference of Randolph’s nickname.

“So well said ZBo! You personify Memphis heart and soul!” another added with heart emojis a popular choice among those commenting.

Others offered praying hands in support of Smith as they continued to comment on Randolph’s message.
