Manchester United’s injury news and comeback dates for Yoro, Mainoo, and Shaw ahead of their match against Chelsea
On Sunday afternoon, Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over his second game as temporary manager. Manchester United will play Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
The Dutch man got off to a great start as caretaker boss on Wednesday night, beating Leicester City 5-2 in the EFL Cup. Since Ruben Amorim was officially hired yesterday, Van Nistelrooy will be in charge of three more games before Amorim starts his new job.
United quickly turns their attention to Premier League play, where they will play Enzo Maresca’s team. The last few games have been good for Chelsea, but on Wednesday they lost in the EFL Cup.
Before his start date later next week, Amorim is likely to watch the game from afar. Van Nistelrooy is likely to choose from the same group of players that played against Leicester last week. So, here is the most recent news about injuries at United.
Injury to Leny Yoro: broken metatarsal
Last month, United gave a report on Yoro and said that he had started training outside at Carrington. Since he broke his metatarsal in the first game of United’s pre-season tour of the US in July, he hasn’t been able to play.
After surgery at the beginning of August, United thought he would be out for about three months. As early as September, he was able to walk without crutches. Since then, he has been working hard at the Carrington gym. His first game for the club will not happen soon and will not be rushed.
Potential date of return: November.
Harry Maguire hurt his foot.
Since he was taken off against Aston Villa before the international break, Maguire has not played. He had to be helped off the pitch by members of the United medical team, and Matthijs de Ligt came on just before halftime to replace him.
Maguire wrote on social media that he would be out for “a few weeks.” A few days later, Erik ten Hag, the former manager of Manchester United, confirmed this. He has been out for four games in a row.
Potential date of return: November.
Calf injury for Luke Shaw
At this point, Shaw has not played for United in eight months. In September, after the first international break of the season, it was thought that he would be back, and then again last month, but he is still not back.
Ten Hag stated that Shaw had a setback after the loss to West Ham United last weekend. He also said that Shaw’s recovery is not going the way United needed it to.
It’s true that the process isn’t going the way we thought it would. We also want to be very careful with the loss, if you want to call it that. We want to be very careful now that he is dropping again.
He will have a big effect on our levels and results, so we need to make sure we do this right. We know his past. During games, he can’t just quit and then come back. Therefore, we shall do it with great care.”
Not sure when they might come back.
Knee injury to Tyrell Malacia
In the past few weeks, Malacia has been working with the first team, which is a good sign that he might be making a comeback soon. In the 2022β23 Premier League season, it was the last game he played for United.
βHe is not that far [off], but he is now in a progress situation,β Ten Hag said in August, implying the defender might be back sometime in October. Soon, he can be back with the team for practices and then for games to help them do well. That sounds like it would be possible in two months.”
Even though October is over, it’s still not clear when the left back will be ready to play.
Not sure when they might come back.
Injury to Kobbie Mainoo: Muscle
In the last few minutes of United’s 0-0 draw with Villa, Mainoo hurt a muscle and hasn’t played in the last four games. Ten Hag told the press at his pre-Brentford conference two weeks ago that he thought the school graduate would be unavailable for “a couple of weeks.”
We don’t know yet if he will be able to play when Chelsea comes to town.
The team could come back on November 3 (Chelsea H).
No information on Christian Eriksen’s injury
Eriksen was not in the team that played Leicester because he was in the directors’ box watching the game. He is thought to have missed the game because of an illness, but the specifics of the reason have been kept secret so far.
Possibly unknown return date.
Injury to Mason Mount: Knock
Mount hasn’t played in six games since September 29, when he left a game against Tottenham Hotspur with a head injury that needed stitches.
Ten Hag said before last week’s 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce, “I think we’ll have to wait a little longer for Mount.” I believe he will returns soon.
Possibly unknown return date.
No information on Toby Collyer’s injury
Five days ago, Ten Hag explained why Jack Fletcher was on the team for the win over Brentford by saying that Collyer was another player who had been added to the injury list. Despite this, he didn’t say anything specific about the type or severity of his injury.
His absence is now known to last “roughly a month,” according to the Manchester Evening News.
December could be a good time to come back.
Antony’s injury: ankle sprain
In the dying minutes of United’s scoreless draw with Fenerbahce, Antony had to be taken off on a bed, only 16 minutes after coming off the bench. He needed crutches to leave the stadium and had a safety boot on his left leg.
He later said he had sprained his ankle, so he didn’t play in the recent games against West Ham and Leicester.
Possibly unknown return date.
