According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Manchester United sent someone to watch Alessandro Buongiorno play for Napoli against Empoli in Serie A.

With the additions of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt during the summer transfer window, the Red Devils improved their center defense.

But more players could be moved around in that spot next year, as Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans could all leave.

According to TMW today, United had a representative at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Sunday to keep an eye on Buongiorno, who moved to Napoli from Torino in July 2024 for £33 million.

The 24-year-old has been the team’s main player since the beginning. It is said that the central defender will cost more than £58m when the summer comes around.

United is set to spend a lot of money on a new center back.

Yoro and De Ligt have given the Red Devils better center defense. Lisandro Martinez and him give the club a strong core for the next few years.

However, boss Erik ten Hag might want to add another young player to the team since several defensive players could leave next summer.

Lindelof and Evans’ contracts are coming to an end, so they could be let go. United could keep Maguire for another year, but they’re more likely to sell him.

It’s possible that Buongiorno could take the role. His first few games at Napoli have gone well. He has finished 89% of the passes he has made in Serie A and won 65% of the duels he has fought.

The center-back has made an average of two stops, 3.9 recoveries, and three clearances per game. In the first seven games, he has kept five clean sheets.

United needs another left-footed center back to fight with Martinez, and if Buongiorno keeps doing well at Napoli, he could become a real target.

It’s clear that Manchester United wants to sign Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite for a long time, but the Toffees may look at Buongiorno instead because they can’t lower their price tag of £75 million.
