Gary Neville and Roy Keane have been left perplexed by their former club in anticipation of Liverpool’s forthcoming visit to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s tactical shift in the initial stages of the season has caused concern among Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane. Their former team is preparing to play against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Arne Slot has had an exceptional start to his career at Liverpool, whereas his Dutch counterpart at United is currently in his third year as the club’s manager. Although he has achieved a cup victory in each campaign he has managed, Ten Hag observed his team regress in the Premier League last season.

The primary reason for their inability to consistently construct has been the altering of a playing system, rather than the possession of a definitive style. They have been without a specialist striker for the first two matches of the season.

Neville stated on Sky Sports, “I am uncertain as to whether this is the way he intends to play at this time.” I believe it is challenging to play without a center-forward, full stop, when he is without one.

“[Joshua Zirkzee] has not played much football over the summer, so he is bringing him on after 45 to 60 minutes.” It will be intriguing to observe whether Zirkzee participates in the game today.

Ten Hag has now secured a significant change that Neville can at least take solace in, as centre forward Zirkzee, who was signed this summer, will make his first appearance for the hosts 75 minutes before kick-off at 4pm.

The former full-back continued, “I believe that the CEOs [who] came from Man City, Dan Ashworth, will be interested in seeing a style of play and a pattern established.” Erik ten Hag has not demonstrated that in his initial two years.

“We have observed the back four being changed, the system being changed, and the centre forward being brought on during the game in these first couple of games.” In the first two matches, he has implemented three strategies that have rectified his initial team composition. I believe it is imperative that we disengage from that in order to establish a sense of stability.

Keane, who was his former teammate, added: “I know there’s only a couple of games gone but I’m still worried about the problems from last year, missing chances, not scoring enough goals, and I still think from the couple of games including the community shield, they look very very open.”
