There have been rumors that Nico Williams, the forward for Athletic Bilbao, will leave San Mames after this season, but Williams has said that he is “not thinking about” what will happen next.

Williams was rumored to have had his €55m (£47m) release clause triggered by Barcelona, so it looked like he would be joining the Catalan team during the recent transfer window.

Despite this, Williams chose to stay with Athletic because he wanted to play for the team in Europe this season. His brother and fellow Athletic player Inaki Williams recently said that the Spain star “does not regret” his choice.

People are still guessing about the 22-year-old’s future, though, since Barcelona is likely to renew their interest next summer and Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool are all big fans in the Premier League.

Williams said that a choice about his future will have to wait because he is only focused on the 2024–25 season and possibly leading the Lions to the 2025 Europa League final at San Mames. However, his comments suggest that he could leave Tottenham during the summer transfer window.

United and Barcelona may try to sign Williams next summer.

“That’s not on my mind right now,” he told El Mundo. “I’m glad to be here, and so are my fans.” I love living in Bilbao and want to keep doing what I’m doing there. I’m really happy.

“I’ve always been clear, and I think people can tell.” I think I’m doing a great job trying to get Athletic to the top of Spain and Europe. We are all very excited about the final in San Mames. Now, that’s the only thing that counts.

Some Barcelona fans booed Williams earlier this season when it became clear that he would be staying with Athletic. Williams said that this “surprised” him.

“I will be honest: I was shocked.” “But I didn’t think much of it because people usually whistle at you when you go to a rival’s field,” he said. “But this time it was personal.” “Don’t worry about it; that’s also fun as long as it’s not mean.” It’s part of football to get whistled at, and I don’t mind it too much.

Although Williams was “surprised” by how Barcelona fans reacted,

he said, “In the end, you have to live with it.” There are a lot of people interested in football, including clubs, the media, players, and always there is noise. Since it is what it is, it doesn’t make or break my success. I remain in charge of the identical task I have been handling up to now.

Personaly, there have been hard times when I had to think about a lot of different situations. It was hard, but I have a great family and friends who back me. I hope that this doesn’t happen to me every summer.

Williams has had a slow start to the 2024–25 season, only scoring one goal and setting up another in nine games across all categories. However, he has been experiencing injury problems early in the season.

Due to an injury to his hip, the forward is not currently playing for Spain in the UEFA Nations League. He also missed a recent La Liga game against Celta Vigo because of an ankle problem.

While playing for Athletic, he had a great 2023–24 season, scoring eight goals and setting up 19 others in 37 games. He also scored two goals and set up one more at Euro 2024, helping Spain win the title.
