Liverpool thought they should have been given a penalty very late in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

In Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, boss Jurgen Klopp was adamant that his team should have been given a last-second penalty.

Liverpool took over for long stretches of the second half after Alexis Mac Allister’s spot tied the game again. This gave City’s players and manager Pep Guardiola a lot to think about. Midway through the first half, John Stones scored from a corner kick to give City a 1-0 lead.

Liverpool was feeling good after Mac Allister’s equalizer in the 50th minute. As the game went into eight minutes of extra time, they were looking for blood and thought they should have been given a second penalty late on. After the home team’s protests were ignored by on-field judge Michael Oliver, VAR Stuart Atwell took a close look at the decision. It looked like Jeremy Doku hit Mac Allister in the chest.

Some people think that Doku was found to have challenged the ball while in a “reasonable” position. Everyone at Anfield who supported Liverpool, including Klopp, was sure that there should be a penalty. At the time, Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville said he thought the decision might go Liverpool’s way.

But Atwell went with Oliver’s call on the field, so the game finished with a tie. Klopp was furious about the ruling and slammed it after the game.

“There was no doubt about it,” Klopp told BBC Sport. “They will figure out a reason. It was a foul everywhere on the field, and the player should probably get a yellow card.

“The iPad users around me all said, ‘Wow, clear.'” They might be able to hide behind the words “it’s not clear and obvious.”

“It’s a fine, but we didn’t get it, so that’s okay.” For me, the most important thing is that we can play football that way. Today I saw a lot of amazing acts.
