Luis Rubiales Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Sexual Assault
Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spain’s football federation (RFEF), has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexual assault, following the widely publicized incident involving Jenni Hermoso. The Spanish High Court ruled that Rubiales had kissed Hermoso without her consent during the 2023 Women’s World Cup celebration, a move that sparked outrage and calls for justice worldwide.
The court’s decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing #MeToo movement within sports, as Hermoso bravely came forward with her account of the non-consensual kiss. Rubiales had initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming the kiss was “mutual and consensual.” However, the court found his actions to be an infringement of Hermoso’s rights, ruling that it constituted sexual assault under Spanish law.
In addition to the prison sentence, Rubiales has been ordered to pay a fine exceeding €10,000 (£8,275) to Hermoso as part of the ruling. This sentence comes amid widespread criticism of Rubiales’ leadership within the RFEF, culminating in his resignation as president following intense pressure from the Spanish government, sports figures, and public opinion.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about gender inequality and misconduct in sports organizations. Hermoso, who was a key figure in Spain’s historic World Cup victory, has received widespread support from players, fans, and activists alike.
The ruling has been seen as a landmark moment for women in sports, sending a clear message that acts of sexual violence will not be tolerated, no matter the status of the perpetrator. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of respect, accountability, and consent in all environments, including professional sports.
