The scoring sequence of Darwin Nunez for Uruguay has matched that of the legendary Hector Scarone.

Uruguay is the current leader of Group C, and the Liverpool striker is presently in the United States competing in the Copa America.

Nunez, Facundo Pellistr, and Rodrigo Bentancur of Tottenham all contributed to the 5-0 victory over Bolivia that Marcelo Bielsa’s team secured on Friday.

Consequently, Liverpool’s hero has now scored in seven consecutive games for his country.

Prior to his historic goal against Bolivia this week, he had scored against Costa Rica, Brazil, Panama, Mexico, and Argentina.

No Uruguayan player has achieved that feat since Scarone, the country’s iconic star, did so between 1927 and 1928.

Scarone, who was a member of Barcelona at that time, was regarded as one of the most exceptional players in the globe during that era.

In 51 appearances for the South Americans, he scored 31 goals.

Nunez has scored 18 goals for Liverpool in all competitions this season.

Although his international colleague, Luis Suarez, who also played for Liverpool, is the country’s highest-scoring player with 68 goals, his frequency of appearances is not as frequent as this.

Suarez had not appeared for Uruguay since the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup; however, he returned for the 2026 qualifiers against the United States one year later.

Additionally, he has donned the number nine, which was previously owned by Nunez, for the Copa America.

Suarez commended him for reserving the number for a national icon. “He, a very good kid, with the humility that he possesses, said, ‘No, Luis, you are the No. 9. I will respect you when you are not present if I am going to grab it.'”

In the 83rd minute of the second half against Bolivia, Suarez replaced Nunez, and Bentancur scored their fifth goal six minutes later.

The last time Uruguay won the Copa America was in 2011. Argentina and La Celeste have each won 15 titles, thereby dominating the competition.
