Liverpool legend blasts Man City star Jack Grealish following his goal for England in clash against Ireland
Despite having previously represented the Republic of Ireland, Liverpool legend John Aldridge has criticised Declan Rice and Jack Grealish for their decision to play for England.
Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, the former captain of Aston Villa and a Liverpool legend, have been criticised by John Aldridge for their decision to change their international allegiance.
Rice earned three senior caps for the Republic of Ireland before deciding to represent England, and Grealish played for Ireland at the youth level before making the same transition. And both players were hissed as they scored in England’s 2-0 victory over Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.Aldridge, like Rice and Grealish, was born in England but qualified for Ireland due to his familial heritage. He subsequently elected to represent Ireland over the Three Lions. It is “not right on so many levels” for Rice and Grealish, according to the Liverpool striker, to abandon Ireland.
Aldridge wrote in his Sunday World column, “It was already distressing to observe England’s game of chicken with Ireland at the Aviva Stadium yesterday, let alone witness Declan Rice and Jack Grealish score their two goals.”
“I am aware that it is outdated information, but the actions of those two individuals towards Ireland were unethical on numerous levels. They demonstrated a profound lack of respect for the privilege of wearing a green jersey.” I am in an ideal position to discuss this matter, as I was born in England and could have attempted to join their squad during my ascent up the football hierarchy.
“However, when Jack Charlton extended an invitation to me to represent Ireland, I eagerly accepted, as it had always been my aspiration to don the green shirt.” Rice was unable to return to England a few months later after receiving his first Ireland uniform and kissing the badge.
“Greaish is somewhat unique in that he only competed at the underage level for Ireland; however, I remain of the opinion that it is not permissible to switch international teams.” The two goals scored by England served as a reminder of the potential that Ireland could have achieved by constructing their team around them over the past few years.
Grealish provided ITV with the following response when asked about the reception they received in Dublin: “I believe it was similar to what Dec and I anticipated.” Dec and I both found our time playing here to be enjoyable. I definitely did. I have a significant Irish heritage in my family, so there is no bad DNA on my side.
Rice, on the other hand, stated, “It was an exceptionally enjoyable afternoon.” It was evident that the manager’s inaugural encounter was a success. We are aware of the significance of winning this division, as we are currently in the league below our desired position in the Nations League. I believe that it was extremely significant to arrive here today and secure a victory. Additionally, scoring alongside Jack was an extremely enjoyable experience.
