Liverpool legend believes club are about to make January transfer mistake
According to Steve Nicol, Liverpool should acquire a defensive midfielder during the January transfer window.
Steve Nicol believes Liverpool, his former club, would be doomed to fail if they failed to acquire a central defensive midfielder in January.
In the summer, Jurgen Klopp strengthened the midfield, which had been a weakness for his squad, through the acquisition of four players. However, what he possibly did not anticipate was Fabinho’s departure to Saudi Arabia.
As soon as it became evident that the Brazilian was in demand, the club pursued Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, both of whom ultimately joined Chelsea after a brief dispute. The funds were ultimately utilized to acquire a 30-year-old veteran and unexpected option in Wataru Endo, as well as a 21-year-old boxing target in Ryan Gravenberch.
Endo is more acclimated to playing in the deeper midfield position, but he has been gradually acclimating to the English style of play. As a result, Klopp has thus far relied on Alexis Mac Allister, who arrived in the summer and is a natural No. 10, rather than Curtis Jones, whom he occasionally utilized toward the end of the previous season.
Liverpool are currently one point adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City, whom they have yet to encounter. In light of this, it is reasonable to assert that no significant challenges have arisen thus far. In order to optimize his options, however, it is increasingly agreed that Klopp should augment his defensive midfielder corps with a younger counterpart, ensuring that Fabinho’s responsibilities are sustained indefinitely, that his other alternatives benefit, and that injury concerns are ultimately mitigated.
Despite this, according to the ECHO, there is no pressing need to acquire such a player in the forthcoming transfer window, as 19-year-old Stefan Bajcetic is recovering from an injury. Club legend Nicol disagrees with this assessment.
“They can advance slightly further if they can acquire a player in addition to Dominique Szoboszlai and Mac Allister,” the former full-back said on the ESPN FC podcast. “At this time, I am unaware of [who that might be] and also have no one in mind.
“I once believed [Sofyan] Amrabat would be an ideal complement to them, but things are not quite working out at United.” At first, I believed he would be an excellent fit; he could simply remain behind the two of them and allow them to advance further.
Although Endo and Jones may not be the solutions, I do not believe they are. At this time, I believe Liverpool should be keeping an eye out for a player.”
Andre Trindade, the Copa Libertadores champion, was most strongly linked prior to the Reds’ stance becoming public knowledge; since then, other candidates, including Morten Frendrup of Genoa, have been mentioned.
