The premier player for the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving, has decided to forego his $43 million player option for the upcoming season in favour of a new $119 million contract that would span three years.
With a new contract in the works, the Dallas Mavericks will be able to retain their star guard for the foreseeable future.
Shams Charania of ESPN reports that nine-time NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving plans to sign a three-year, $119 million deal with the team, instead of exercising his $43 million player option.
Irving will be 35 years old in the last year of the deal, which is why a player option for the 2027–28 season is a part of it. Following an ACL tear in March, Irving, 33, is presently undergoing rehabilitation.
Irving shot 40.1% from beyond the arc and averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 boards, and 4.6 assists in 50 games played this season before his injury.
Even without their leading point guard, the Mavs were unable to go past the Play-In Tournament previous season, finishing with a 39-43 record.
Now that the team’s core is set, they’ll likely rely on Irving, Anthony Davis, and Flagg, the probable first-round choice.
