KYRIE IRVING EXPOSES THE DARK SIDE OF GAMING: Mavericks Star Wars Battlefront 2 Obsession Fuel 2200% Surge in Steam Players

Star Wars Battlefront 2 has had an unforeseen comeback, and it’s far from over.

It took us a while to recall how fantastic Battlefront 2 is, but last month we reported on the unexpected spike in Steam player counts for the game.

The previous four weeks saw a decline in such player counts.

That is, until EA started a 90% off discount last weekend. According to SteamDB data, the number of players for Battlefront 2 on Steam hit a new record high of 35,892 on Sunday, after having skyrocketed overnight.

With 1,540 players on Sunday, June 23, last year, the player count was nearly 2200% lower, and this is more than three times more than the previous Steam peak of 10,489 players.

Given that Battlefront 2 had been inaccessible for a good portion of 2025 due to extensive hacker antics, the game’s unexpected uptick in popularity is all the more astonishing given that it had spent the better part of the last year averaging below 2,000 continuous players. Andor actor Muhannad Ben Amor contributed 469 hours of gameplay time, and the fact that its player counts began to rise simultaneously with the premiere of Andor season 2 is likely not coincidental.

All that focus led to May’s record-breaking high player count in Battlefront 2, achieved with the aid of a Resurgence Day community event planned by the folks behind Kyber, a massive conversion mod for the game.

One notable champion, Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks, has lately been loud in his support of Battlefront 2.

With an outstanding career in professional basketball, Irving has achieved nine All-Star appearances and won the NBA championship in 2016.

In addition, he has a similarly stellar record as a level 101 Emperor Palpatine in Battlefront 2, which he disclosed in a Saturday Twitch stream. Irving said, “I love this game,” while the stream was playing. “I want them to make Battlefront 3 already, bro!”
