JUST IN: NHL tryouts for NHL training camps have been signed up for.
Veteran players who haven’t been signed yet can get a deal with an NHL team if they do well enough in training camp on a professional tryout contract (PTO). From September 18 to October 4, the regular season started.
The following well-known players were at an NHL camp on a PTO, given in alphabetical order:
Senators Calen Addison (D) from Ottawa
Last season, the 24-year-old played 72 games for the San Jose Sharks and the Minnesota Wild and scored one goal and set up 16 others. Addison has 50 points in 152 regular-season games for the Sharks and Wild, with 6 goals and 44 assists. He also has 1 assist in 3 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Addison was let out of his tryout deal on October 5.
Tyson Barrie, defenseman for the Calgary Flames
For the Nashville Predators last season, the 33-year-old had 15 points (one goal, 14 assists). He played in 41 games. Barrie has 505 points in 809 regular-season games for the Predators, Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Colorado Avalanche. He has scored 109 goals and set up 396 others. In 47 playoff games, he has scored two goals and set up 19 others.
Barrie signed a $1.25 million, one-year deal on October 3.
Skyler Brind’Amour, forward for the Carolina Hurricanes
He is 25 years old and is the son of Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour. Last season, he played 54 games with Charlotte in the American Hockey League and scored three goals and set up five others. That was in the 2017 NHL Draft, in the sixth round, with pick No. 178, but he hasn’t played in the NHL yet.
Brind’Amour signed a two-way, one-year deal on October 5. At NHL level, he will make $775,000, and at AHL level, he will make $75,000.
Avalanche player Pierre-Edouard Bellemare
Over the course of 40 games last season, the 39-year-old had seven points, which came from four goals and three assists. In 700 regular-season games for the Kraken, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Avalanche, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Philadelphia Flyers, Bellemare has 138 points (64 goals, 74 assists). In 85 playoff games, he has 15 points (five goals, 10 assists).
Bellemare was let out of his tryout deal on October 3.
Frank Blais, Sammy Blais, Vancouver Canucks
Last season, the 28-year-old played in 53 games for the St. Louis Blues and scored one goal and set up six others. Blais has 71 points in 257 regular-season games for the Blues and the New York Rangers. He has scored 27 goals and set up 44 others. In 27 playoff games, he has scored 3 goals and set up 5 others. In 2019, he won the Stanley Cup with St. Louis.
Blais was let out of his tryout deal on October 3.
Aaron Dell, G, San Jose Sharks
The goalie, who is 35 years old, last played in the NHL for the Sharks in 2022–23. He had a record of 0–3 with a 2.71 goals against average and a.913 save percentage. Dell has played 130 games (106 starts) for the Sharks, the Buffalo Sabres, and the New Jersey Devils. He is 50-50-13 with a 2.92 goals against average, a.905 save percentage, and five shutouts. He is 0-1 in four playoff games.
Dell was let out of his tryout deal on September 23.
Travis Dermott plays defence for the Edmonton Oilers.
Over the course of 50 games last season, the 27-year-old scored two goals and set up five others, giving him a total of seven points. In 329 regular-season games with the Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks, and Maple Leafs, Dermott has scored 16 goals and set up 46 others. In 22 playoff games, he has scored 2 goals and set up 3 others, giving him 5 points.
Hurricanes forward Sam Gagner
In 28 games last season, the 35-year-old had 10 points, with five goals and five assists. He has played 1,043 games for the Oilers, Jets, Red Wings, Canucks, Blue Jackets, Flyers, and Coyotes and scored 197 goals and set up 332 others. Gagner has helped out four times in the playoffs.
Jon Gillies, G, Toronto Maple Leafs
The 30-year-old last played in the NHL for the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022–2033, when he went 1-0-1 with a 4.57 goals against average and an.864 save percentage. Gillies has played 35 games (27 starts) for the Blue Jackets, the New Jersey Devils, and the Calgary Flames. He has a record of 8-16-3, a growth rate of 3.39, and a save percentage of.891.
Gillies was let out of his tryout deal on October 3.
Rocco Grimaldi, forward for the Carolina Hurricanes
The 31-year-old last played in the NHL with the Nashville Predators in 2021–22, but he didn’t score in any of those seven games. There were 73 points for Grimaldi last season with Chicago in the AHL. He scored 36 goals and had 37 helpers. He has played 203 regular-season games for the Predators, Avalanche, and Panthers and scored 30 goals and set up 37 others. In 11 playoff games, he scored 3 goals and set up 1 other player.
Mike Hoffman, forward for the Edmonton Oilers
In 66 games with the Sharks last year, the 34-year-old had 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists). Hoffman has scored 228 goals and set up 259 others in 745 regular-season games for the Sharks, the Canadiens, the Blues, the Florida Panthers, and the Ottawa Senators. He has also scored 20 goals and set up nine others in 33 playoff games.
Hoffman was let out of his tryout deal on September 30.
G Michael Hutchinson plays for the New Jersey Devils.
Last season, the 34-year-old played one NHL game for the Detroit Red Wings. In 32 AHL games for Grand Rapids, he went 14-14-3 with a 2.89 goals-against average,.892 save percentage, and two shutouts. He has played 154 NHL games (127 starts) for the Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Maple Leafs, Avalanche, Panthers, and Winnipeg Jets, going 57-62-18 with a 2.94 goals against average,.903 save percentage, and six shutouts. He is also 2-1 in four playoff games (three starts).
Hutchinson was let out of his tryout deal on October 1.
Tyler Johnson is a forward for the Boston Bruins.
There were 67 games last season and the 34-year-old had 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists). He played for the Chicago Blackhawks. For the Blackhawks and Lightning, Johnson has scored 193 goals and set up 238 others in 738 regular-season games. In 116 playoff games, he has scored 32 goals and set up 33 others, giving him 65 points. In 2020 and 2021, he won the Cup with Tampa Bay.
Boris Katchouk, forward for the Anaheim Ducks
Over the course of 59 games last season, the 26-year-old scored seven goals and set up six others, giving him 13 points. Katchouk has played 176 games for the Senators, Blackhawks, and Lightning and scored 25 goals and set up 21 others. He has 36 points.
Katchouk was let out of his tryout deal on September 30.
Neil Kinkaid, goalie for the New York Islanders
His last NHL game was in 2022–23, when he played in two games for the Colorado Avalanche and the Boston Bruins. He is 35 years old now. In 24 games with Chicago of the AHL last year, Kinkaid went 8-14-2, had a 3.54 GAA, and made 880 saves. He has played 169 NHL games (146 starts) for the Avalanche, the Bruins, the Rangers, the Canadiens, and the New Jersey Devils and is 70-58-21 with a 2.91 goals against average, a.905 save percentage, and eight shutouts. He is 0-2 in two playoff games.
D Nikolai Knyzhov plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The 26-year-old helped the Sharks score one goal in 10 games last year. Knyzhov has scored three goals and set up nine others in 81 NHL games, giving him 12 points.
Knyzhov was let out of his tryout deal on September 27.
Nick Kulemin, forward for the Ottawa Senators
The 38-year-old last played in the NHL with the New York Islanders in 2017–18, when he had three points (one goal, two assists) in 13 games. He has spent the last six seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. Kulemin has 274 points in 669 NHL regular-season games for the Islanders and Maple Leafs. He has scored 121 goals and set up 153 others. In 25 playoff games, he has scored two goals and set up five others.
Kulemin was let out of his tryout deal on September 30.
Kevin Labanc, forward for the New Jersey Devils
Last season, the 28-year-old played in 46 games for the Sharks and scored two goals and set up seven others. There have been 478 regular season games with San Jose, and Labanc has scored 82 goals and set up 143 others. In the playoffs, he has scored 5 goals and set up 9 others, giving him 14 points.
On October 5, Labane signed a one-year deal with the Blue Jackets.
Gustav Lindstrom, D, Anaheim Ducks
In 46 games last season, the 25-year-old had 10 points, with three goals and seven assists. He played for the Ducks and the Canadiens. Lindstrom has played 174 games for the Ducks, Canadiens, and Red Wings and scored five goals and set up 30 others. He has 35 points.
Lindstrom was let out of his tryout deal on October 4.
Steven Lorentz, forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs
The 28-year-old scored one goal and set up two others in 38 regular-season games for the Panthers last year. He also scored two goals and set up one other in 16 playoff games to help the team win the Cup. On the season, Lorentz has scored 21 goals and set up 22 others in 230 games for the Panthers, Sharks, and Carolina Hurricanes. In the playoffs, he has scored two goals and set up four others in 32 games.
Matt Martin, New York Islanders winger
In 57 games last season, the 35-year-old had eight points, with four goals and four assists. Over the course of 955 regular season games with the Islanders and Maple Leafs, Martin has 176 points (81 goals, 95 assists). In 88 playoff games, he has 13 points (eight goals, five assists).
Max Pacioretty, forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs
Last season, the 35-year-old played in 47 regular-season games for the Washington Capitals and had 23 points (4 goals, 19 assists). He also had one assist in four playoff games. Since January 19, 2023, Pacioretty had not played because of a torn Achilles tendon. His first game of the season was on January 3, 2023. He has played 902 regular-season games for the Capitals, Hurricanes, Golden Knights, and Canadiens and scored 330 goals and set up 338 others. In the playoffs, he has scored 50 goals and set up 25 others in 78 games.
Tanner Pearson, forward for the Vegas Golden Knights
Over the course of last season, the 32-year-old scored five goals and set up eight others, giving him 13 points. Pearson has played 644 regular-season games for the Canadiens, Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings and scored 138 goals and set up 147 others. He has also scored 23 goals and set up 14 others in 51 playoff games. In 2014, he won the Cup with the Kings.
Pearson signed a one-year deal with the Golden Knights on October 4.
Mark Pysyk, defenseman for the Anaheim Ducks
In 68 games with the Buffalo Sabres in 2021–22, the 32-year-old had 12 points (three goals, nine assists). That was his last NHL game. There were 37 games last season with Calgary and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL. He had four goals. Pysyk has played 521 NHL games for the Sabres, the Dallas Stars, and the Panthers and has scored 28 goals and set up 76 others. He has not scored in any playoff games.

Ottawa Senators’ Dustin Tokarski is a guard.
In 2022–23, when he was 35 years old, the goalie last played in the NHL. He played in four games for the Pittsburgh Penguins and started two of them. So far this season, Tokarski has played 80 games (67 starts) for the Penguins, the Buffalo Sabres, the Anaheim Ducks, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has a 3.15 goals against average, a.902 save percentage, and two shutouts. In the playoffs, he has played five games and has a 2.60 goals against average and a.916 save percentage.
Jack Vrana, forward for the Washington Capitals
Last season, the 28-year-old played in 21 games for the Blues and scored two goals and set up four others. Vrana has scored 110 goals and set up 99 others in 367 regular-season games for the Blues, Red Wings, and Capitals. In 38 playoff games, he has scored three goals and set up five others, giving him eight points. In 2018, he won the Cup with the Capitals.
Austin Watson, Winger for the Detroit Red Wings
Last season, the 32-year-old played in 33 games for the Lightning and got 93 penalty minutes. He scored two goals and set up two others. Watson has scored 60 goals and set up 58 others in 515 regular-season games for the Lightning, Senators, and Predators. In 45 playoff games, he has scored 10 goals and set up 9 others, giving him 19 points.
Andy Welinski plays defence for the New Jersey Devils.
After 13 games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2020–21, the 31-year-old last played in the NHL. He didn’t score any goals. He played 35 AHL games with Charlotte and Iowa last year and scored three goals and set up seven others. After 46 NHL games, Welinski has six points: one goal and five assists. He has played all 46 games with the Ducks.
The Utah Hockey Club’s Kailer Yamamoto
In 59 games last season, the 26-year-old had 16 points, which was eight goals and eight assists. Yamamoto has 134 points in 303 regular-season games for the Kraken and Oilers. He has scored 58 goals and set up 76 others. In 34 playoff games, he has scored 3 goals and set up 9 others.
On Oct. 6, Yamamoto signed a one-year, two-way deal with Utah.
Jakub Zboril, New Jersey Devils defenseman
The 27-year-old last played in the NHL with the Bruins in 2022–23. In 22 games, he scored one goal and set up three others, giving him four points. He helped out on nine goals in 31 games last year with Providence in the AHL. He has 16 points in 76 NHL games with Boston, with one goal and 15 assists.
