Nick Saban, the former head coach of Alabama, is the best college football coach ever. He is Kirby Smart’s target because he is the best college head coach of all time.

Smart still has a long way to go before he can catch Saban in terms of national titles. Meanwhile, Smart can get closer to Saban’s level and start talking about being on the same level as him in other ways. This past week, Smart did something that Saban had never been able to do.

Multiple trips to the SEC Championship game in a row

This past weekend, Georgia football locked up a spot in the 2024 SEC Championship game. It was an exciting day in the SEC, with a lot of wins. The last time they made it to the final game was in 1993. This is their fourth year in a row doing it.

For Saban, making it to the SEC Championship game once every three years was the best thing that ever happened. That happened from 2014 to 2016.

Smart and Georgia have been to the title game seven times in the last eight years, which is four years in a row. From 2017 to 2019, UGA also made it to the SEC Championship game more times than Saban and Alabama. After missing the SEC Championship game for a year, Georgia has now done more than Saban ever did.

Georgia was able to do this in the first year that the SEC no longer has divisions, which is the best thing about this stretch. When UGA was making all of these title games, the very first thing that everyone always said was that the East division was so weak compared to the West. However, Georgia disproved that point of view this season by making it to the title game in the first year without divisions.

Smart needs to work hard before he can be in the same room as Saban. He is on his way to becoming Saban, though, and this record is one thing that will help him get there. Smart needs to win more national titles for Georgia in order to catch Saban.
