Toni Kroos made his final appearance for Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley, which they won 2-0 over Borussia Dortmund.

Following Real Madrid’s most recent Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund, Jose Mourinho made a jest that UEFA should extend Toni Kroos’ retirement.

On Saturday night at Wembley Stadium, Real Madrid won their 15th European championship with goals in the second half from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior, defeating Dortmund 2-0. The final appearance of German midfielder Kroos, who declared retirement after the Euros this summer, was for the Spanish titans.

Upon being substituted late in the game, he was showered with a standing ovation and appeared profoundly moved by the enthusiastic reception from the spectators. Mourinho, speaking on TNT Sports, urged UEFA to intervene and prevent Kroos from retiring while still in excellent form.

The former manager of Chelsea and Manchester United quipped, “It ought to be prohibited. UEFA and FIFA have an immense number of regulations and decisions. “Decide and prevent that individual from retiring!”

Following the triumph, Kroos dove headlong into a multitude of jubilant supporters, who were jubilant over the continued dominance of Real Madrid in Europe. He joined the ranks of greats including Dani Carvajal, Luka Modric, and Nacho, all of whom now possess six Champions League titles, by solidifying his legacy with this triumph.

Kroos was queried by CBS Sports prior to the championship game regarding the possibility of him reassessing his retirement decision. He promptly replied, “No, it has been finalized. “I declare a decision to be final.”

Over the course of a decade, the 34-year-old has amassed an impressive total of 464 appearances for Real Madrid, in which he has contributed 98 assists and 28 goals. His enduring impact at the club is cemented in his status as one of their all-time greatest midfielders, primarily recognized for his dynamic collaboration with Modric.

Prior to the match at Wembley, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised Kroos, remarking, “His choice to depart is that of a great, a decision of character. We are bidding farewell to a footballing legend who has graced our presence with his greatness.

“With little ego, he has always been a fine midfielder of tremendous quality and admirable character who has played for the team. We are fortunate to have had him for the past decade. Individually, Toni merits to conclude his career with a Champions League, but another Champions League is not necessary for the continuation of his career.

“He has been a fantastic player for 10 years, he had made history with Real Madrid and in world football.”

Kroos came perilously close to joining Manchester United in 2014; had the club not substituted Louis van Gaal for David Moyes, it seems he would have completed the transfer.

Kroos stated in 2022, “I was aware in advance that United was interested in me. Moyes unequivocally emphasized that. Spending the afternoon with such delightful individuals was a delight. Our extensive discussion of United’s football strategy persuaded me.

Conversely, we also became acquainted as individuals. After that, we learned a great deal about the Moyes family. We discussed how we all lived and envisioned our futures as a family. We ultimately split up to accomplish it. Thus, we reached a verbal agreement.

“The following course of action should be to examine everything in Manchester in person.” The relocation would not have been overly intricate; in fact, we had only one infant who was seven months old at the time. “Everything would have been in effect.”

Kroos, reflecting on the failed maneuver, further stated, “I am not the type to contemplate hypothetical situations. Undoubtedly, it was in near proximity. Nearly, I traveled to Manchester United. However, events unfolded differently.

“I currently have no what-if thoughts.” Because they lack genuine and definitive solutions. I can only say that it is highly unlikely that I would have been able to secure three Champions League victories while playing for Manchester United.
