Jarrod Bowen gives verdict on West Ham penalty vs Man United – and Erik ten Hag won’t like it
Referee David Coote might have made the wrong choice, according to Jarrod Bowen, when he gave West Ham a penalty in extra time during their controversial 2-1 win over Manchester United.
United lost the lead in the 73rd minute, even though they dominated the first half. After getting Danny Ings’ scuffed shot, Crysencio Summerville scored from close range.
Erik ten Hag’s team quickly reacted by tying the game when Casemiro bundled home a cross, but their happiness didn’t last long as West Ham took the lead from the penalty spot.
After Matthijs de Ligt seemed to hit Ings in the area, David Coote was sent to the sidelines to watch, and he changed his mind about giving West Ham a penalty kick. Then, Jarrod Bowen scored the goal from 12 yards out to give Julen Lopetegui’s team all three points.
He told Premier League Productions that he didn’t think West Ham should have been given a penalty when the event happened. This was his opinion on the controversial decision to give West Ham a penalty.
Bowen stated: “At the time I saw [Danny] Ings got kicked and I think they got kicked so I thought it wasn’t a pen.” “I thought it might be given, and then Cre [Summerville] had the ball, and it was a waiting game,” he said.
“When there are punishments, you know what to do and how to do it. While you wait, you think, “Should I go the other way?” But I did what I knew, stepped up, and wanted to hit, which I happily did.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag made it sound like he didn’t believe the judge and VAR were right. “Before the season, there was instruction that VAR should only step in for clear and obvious mistakes,” he told BBC Sport. “That was not a clear and obvious mistake by the referee on the field.”
Some people, like former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara, agreed with Ten Hag and were angry about the choice. Sky Sports quoted him as saying, “The ball bounces up and it’s a 50/50.” These two have both gone for it, though they have both been a little hesitant. Ings is already on his way down, though. De Ligt doesn’t really catch him as he tries to get the penalty.
“None of them really make contact on it, and you see them frequently in the box.” I think it’s actually pretty cruel. VAR has sent the official to the monitor because he didn’t give that on the field. He looked at that for a while and asked himself, “Am I really punishing them for that?”
“That’s not okay with me; it changes the rules of the game. The referee has seen it, but he hasn’t given it.” There isn’t enough touch, so that’s not a penalty. It isn’t very clear or obvious, and it’s not a huge mistake.
