During a collision in April, Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant was knocked to the floor.
The impact was so severe that it prematurely ended his playoff run. Fans of the Memphis Grizzlies have been waiting three months, but the star is finally back with an announcement: he’s here.
There is more at stake than just one player’s recovery in Morant’s health report, what with training camp quickly approaching and a drastically changed team all around him.
What Did Ja Morant Say About His Recovery Progress?
Morant spoke with an ESPN reporter recently, delivering an upbeat update about his health. After his hip injury sidelined him during the 2024-25 playoffs, he’s confident and ready for action.
“I feel good, ready to go,” Morant said. “I’m already in the lab.”
His commitment to recovery and optimism about returning excite fans who’ve missed him since April. When the reporter asked if fans will get to see the “Ja of old,” he Said, “For sure!”
But getting back to that level means overcoming the freak accident that cut short Memphis’s playoff hopes.
How Did Morant’s Playoff Injury Happen?
Morant injured his hip on April 24 during Game 3 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. With roughly three minutes left in the second quarter, Morant attempted a transition layup after a steal by his teammate, Scotty Pippen Jr. But as he rose, Thunder’s Luguentz Dort came in the way mistakenly, causing him to take a hard fall under the basket.
He fell awkwardly, crashing to the floor on his left hip and sustaining a left hip contusion. After rolling around in pain, he picked himself up, shot free throws, and limped off the floor. He ripped his jersey apart as he returned to the locker room, missing the remainder of that contest and Game 4 as Memphis fought hard to stay in the series.
This particular injury came as a shock, as he had just recovered from his posterior hip subluxation in November, which had cost him several games.
What Changes Have the Grizzlies Made This Offseason?
Following Morant’s injury and a disappointing playoff run, the Grizzlies have spent the offseason reshaping their roster. The front office made appealing trades by moving on from franchise cornerstone Desmond Bane, looking toward a fresher direction. The front office aims to strengthen its backcourt depth while keeping Morant as the focal point of it all.
For the 2024–25 season, Morant averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 4.1 rebounds, solidifying his position as the Grizzlies’ offensive anchor. The team’s chances in 2025-26 will be greatly affected by his durability and form.
