In the Champions League draw, 53-years-old Man City coach Pep Guardiola reveals three (3) teams that he wants Manchester City to avoid playing against in the UCL
On Friday morning, Manchester City will find out who they will play in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has already said that he would rather not play Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, or Paris Saint-Germain in today’s Champions League quarterfinal draw.
At 11 a.m. UK time, the draws for both the quarter-finals and the semi-finals will take place at UEFA’s offices in Nyon, Switzerland. City easily beat Danish team FC Copenhagen 6-2 over two legs to move on to the last eight.
After winning the first leg 3-1 in Denmark, City won the second leg last week by the same score at the Etihad Stadium. This meant that they kept their chances of keeping their European title alive with little trouble. After being promised a match against the runner-up from the group stage in the last 16, the quarter-final and semi-final draws have no seeds, so anyone can play anyone.
When City won the prize in Istanbul last year, they showed that you have to beat the best teams to win. But Guardiola would rather his team avoid one of Europe’s other big teams, like Bayern, with whom he won three Bundesliga titles. After the win over Copenhagen, he said out loud that he would rather not play for that German club or PSG or Madrid.
“If you play against Bayern Munich, you know how many Champions Leagues they’ve won and how long they’ve been around,” Guardiola said last week. “We honor all of them, and we’re scared too.” We are, but I don’t know if they are.”
Guardiola said that his team will be ready for another last eight match because of how well they have done in Europe in recent years, even though he wanted to avoid one of the other favorites. Last season, City beat Bayern in the quarterfinals and then Madrid in the semifinals. They scored nine goals in those four games.
“I tell the players, maybe it’s not enough for you,” Guardiola said. Every time we go through the group stage, I remember how hard it is. Some say it’s just Copenhagen, which is fine. I think they’re great. It looks like getting a score of 6-2 is simple. No, it’s not.
“In the end, Madrid had to suffer to beat Leipzig.” People say it’s easy when we play Leipzig. It’s not simple; everything is hard.
“It’s good that people don’t question our form; that means our standards are clear.” But we know the managers and stars inside out. I want my club and my leadership to make me feel like everything is so hard to understand. Because you are there. Still beating everyone else, that’s great.”
Guardiola wants City to avoid Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. That leaves Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona as their four other possible opponents in the draw. They beat FC Porto on penalties on Tuesday night and are now in the quarterfinals.
