As the NBA Finals were underway, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith deftly turned the attention away from the Thunder and Pacers and onto the Memphis Grizzlies.
The response was rapid and intense. Concerning the reluctance of elite players to sign with the Grizzlies, Stephen A. recently made a strong and contentious assertion: “There’s an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don’t feel it’s the safest environment. I’m talking to the local authorities in Memphis. You’ve got to clean some of that stuff up, because it’s dissuasive to NBA players.”
Shortly after Smith’s X (previously Twitter) post, Ja Morant retaliated by directly addressing him. When challenged, the host of First Take redoubled his efforts,
“So this is what we’re doing now @JaMorant?… Would you prefer I go into detail about WTH has been going on in Memphis? Why players have stated they’re not interested in going? Or even MORE details? Or would you like me to leave well enough alone, and let the great peeps of Memphis address it on their own? Your call! I’m all ears!”
Is it true, though, that NBA players find Memphis to be as unappealing as SAS says? As that back-and-forth was becoming viral online, a real-life Memphis resident chose to weigh in, defending not only Ja Morant but the entire city.
After his massive trade to Orlando, the ex-Grizzlies star took a stand in support of Ja and Memphis. Directly responding to the criticism, Bane stated, “I think all that is just false.” He added that he found the critique hard to believe. Memphis is a city full of love, as you’ll see for yourself after you visit, learn about, and become acquainted with it. In my opinion, Memphis is a stunning city.
Their organization is top-notch. Without a doubt, everyone who visits will be pleased with what they have to offer.
There are some bad aspects of Memphis, Bane said, but he stressed that this is true of all cities. “Not everyone had exposure to every topic imaginable,” he commented. Beyond Bane’s defense of the city, what really struck out were the citizens’ feelings of pride and the bond they form with players who show their support for the city.
Memphis is a source of great pride for its residents.
It may lack some of the modern conveniences enjoyed by other cities, but the residents take great pleasure in their community and its well-being, as well as in their genuine concern for one another, he remarked.
That’s not empty rhetoric; Bane is an expert in the field.
While playing for Memphis, he became well-respected off the court and as a player, averaging 17.8 points per game. For him, it will always hold happy memories.
In the midst of criticism from Memphis, Desmond Bane challenges Stephen A. Smith’s motivation.
After laying out the many problems with the Memphis story, Bane questioned Stephen A.’s recent behavior. The ESPN veteran has been very critical of Ja Morant, Memphis, and Tyrese Haliburton’s superstar status in recent days.
Moreover, he was discovered playing Solitaire when the NBA Finals were in progress. His actions left Bane somewhat bewildered.
Knowing how bad that can get, I make a conscious effort to avoid getting into that too much. However, Ja is undoubtedly one of my closest friends, much as Tyrese is. Good individuals all around. I feel bad about it, you know. The NBA Finals are featuring two excellent basketball teams, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers, and I am really enjoying it. Plus, there’s a plethora of material to cover. It’s just what it is, and I try not to pay attention to it, Bane stated on the podcast The Young Man and the Three, even though there are instances when he doesn’t explain the purpose. Both Ja’s X-rated reaction that went viral and Bane’s in-depth analysis show that they are opposed to SAS’s contentious comment regarding Memphis. Although Bane is no longer a member of the Grizzlies, he did have a powerful message for any players who may have an opportunity to join the club in the future: “They know if you’re faking them.” If you are genuine, people will love you no matter what.
