In an honest review of Erik ten Hag’s firing, Rio Ferdinand slams the owners of Man United.
Eric ten Hag was fired by Manchester United, which doesn’t surprise Rio Ferdinand. However, Ferdinand criticizes Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos for how they handled the case.
Nine days after the season started, United released a statement saying that Ten Hag had been fired. Four of their first 13 games in all competitions were losses, and Sunday’s 2-1 loss at West Ham was the last straw for the Dutch manager.
He told his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube account, after deciding that Ten Hag should be fired, “Am I surprised? Not at all. Manchester United is going to change things and go in a new way.
“Ineos has taken over to change how football is run. This is their second big choice; the first was to keep Ten Hag after the season ended.” It looks like the FA Cup changed its mind and now thinks that the team needs a new boss.
“When I think about how things turned out for Ineos at the end of the season, I wonder if they created a situation for themselves by the way they handled it in the summer.” In hindsight, I believe they will realize they could have handled it better and differently.
The public knowing that you’re looking for new managers is not a good way to do it or market the job. If the guy comes in under that cloud, it’s not good, and it’s even worse for the guy in charge (Ten Hag).
United was talking to and looking at other managers while he was manager, so they kept him on as manager, but he had to deal with questions about his status in the company all the time. Being honest, I think Ineos could have handled the situation better if they were being honest. It’s not easy to deal with a problem that is so public at a club like Manchester United.
“But it is what it is and they kept the man in charge, season kicks in and I actually thought we were seeing new signs after the first two matches and we get beat by Liverpool and we never recovered.”
It was a great first season for Ten Hag in English football after being hired as United’s new head coach in May 2022. After winning the Carabao Cup and making it to the FA Cup final, he led United to third place in the Premier League.
And United finished eighth in the league and were immediately eliminated from the Champions League in the 54-year-old’s second season in charge. Rumors abounded about Ten Hag’s future, even though they won the FA Cup at the end of the season.
New United chiefs Ineos chose to keep Ten Hag on board and give him a one-year extension to his deal, even though they looked at and talked to other managers. United’s awful start to the season led to Ten Hag’s firing because that choice seems to have gone wrong.
When Ten Hag became United’s new head coach in May 2022, he had a great first season in English football. United finished third in the Premier League, won the Carabao Cup, and made it to the FA Cup final under his direction.
But United finished eighth in the league and were knocked out of the Champions League at the first round in the 54-year-old’s second season in charge. Even though they won the FA Cup at the end of the season, there were rumors about Ten Hag’s prospects.
Even though the new leaders of United looked at and talked to other managers, they chose to keep Ten Hag on and give him a one-year extension on his contract. That choice seems to have gone wrong, as United has had a terrible start to the season, which led to Ten Hag being fired.
