Manchester United
I couldn’t read the Man Utd boss because he got angry with me over newspaper headlines.
This famous Manchester United manager was known for having a short but sharp temper. In 2000, one of his star players got the worst of it when he misunderstood something.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once yelled at Sir Alex Ferguson, who used to run Manchester United. Ferguson praised Ferguson for being unreadable.
The Scotsman was in charge at Old Trafford for 27 years, from 1986 to 2013. He was never afraid to get into a fight with his players. Solskjaer, who usually keeps his cool, was no different.
The Norwegian player was so good off the bench that Ferguson often didn’t put him in the starting lineup. He was known as a “super-sub.” When he talked to the media about being the club’s “super sub” in 2000, the English paper got the meaning of his words wrong and saw them as a jab.
Ferguson was very angry about it. Solskjaer, who is 51 years old, remembered the angry conversation he had with Sir Alex, who would later sit in the same bench.
The first thing Solskjaer said in Bring On United was, “In December 2000, I was in great shape and scored in four different league games.” Then, in the last game of the year, we played Newcastle away. I didn’t do well on that one. We got in trouble, and I should have paid for it. It was put in the upper right spot by Becks.
“I thought maybe I’d be player of the month.” Some British newspapers took an interview I did with the Norwegian press and turned it into headlines that were much worse than what I said.
When asked, “Now that you are a regular…” I replied, “No, not really. I’ll probably be on the bench soon, and I don’t see myself as a regular.”
It was all over the press that I said the gaffer was going to leave me soon, so he lost it when he saw me. I believe he only read the cover story.
Solskjaer was clearly under a lot of pressure from Ferguson, who didn’t seem to like how he was acting. It doesn’t matter what, he still praises the Scotsman for giving him an edge.
The Norwegian player also said, “He then looked at me as a defeatist because I was happy to be a substitute instead of pushing myself and saying I should play every game.”
That was my way of saying that I’ll follow the gaffer’s orders and do what he asks of me. The boss was great because you could never figure out what he was saying.
