“I am not sure, to be absolutely certain.” – Jurgen Klopp responded to Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis’ fury after Liverpool win against Forest (0-1)
Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest, was very angry after Liverpool’s late win, and Jurgen Klopp spoke out about it.
After his team’s last-second 1-0 win at the City Ground on Saturday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp asked where Evangelos Marinakis’ anger came from. Marinakis is the owner of Nottingham Forest. Darwin Nunez’s header in the 99th minute gave Liverpool a boost in their title defense in the Premier League. The goal caused amazing scenes at the end of the game.
Klopp wanted to win four trophies in his last season as manager, but Liverpool looked tired and out of ideas against Forest. Another moment of individual brilliance kept that dream alive. Nunez scored that goal, coming on as a replacement in the second half. It put the away team four points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
But there was some trouble over it. Just now, referee Paul Tierney stopped the game because Ibrahima Konata hurt his head in Liverpool’s area. Callum Hudson-Odoi had the ball on the left side of the field when the game was stopped. When the game started again, though, Tierney didn’t give the ball back to Forest but instead let Liverpool start again.
Then came the winning goal, which made Forest regret many missed chances earlier in the game. They were now only four points above the relegation zone, and a possible points loss was still a possibility.
Tierney was surrounded by Forest players and coaches after the game was over. They were also seen fighting with Virgil van Dijk while the away fans were going crazy with celebrations. Tierney gave Forest coach Steven Reid a red card for what he did, and then he and Marinakis rushed after the referee down the hallway in an attempt to start a fight.
But Klopp didn’t listen to Forest’s protests after the game. Klopp asked. “It happened the same way earlier in the game, didn’t it?” “The same thing, but the other way around. It had already happened that way earlier in the game, so I thought it would happen again. Perhaps I too would have asked the question if things had not gone that way.
I think that’s the rule now, though. To be honest, I don’t know. But it happened twice, and each time the same thing happened. Not sure why we should talk about it, but that’s it. Then we had to play a certain number of moves before we could score the goal.
“I totally get how excited, angry, and other things people in Nottingham are feeling.” Their fight was for everything, of course. But in this case, it happened twice and was dealt with the same way both times. “That makes sense, I’d say.”
Rob Schofield of BBC Radio Five Live said that the two yelled “Respect the players!” all the way to Tierney’s office. Take care of the players! This takes place every week! Honor the players!”
Security allegedly had to hold Marinakis back because tensions were about to rise in the background while Liverpool and Forest were celebrating.
Liverpool has won their last six games in all competitions. Last weekend, they beat Chelsea to win a record-setting 10th Carabao Cup.
Things are about to get tough for Klopp. His next games are in the Europa League against Sparta Prague, in the Premier League against City, and in the FA Cup at Manchester United.
