Cam Spencer, a former star on the men’s basketball team at UConn, will be joining the Memphis Grizzlies and will be receiving a larger salary.
Spencer has agreed to a new four-year, $10.5 million contract.
As stated in the contract, three whole seasons are assured. ESPN Senior Insider Shams Charania broke the news of Spencer’s contract renegotiation first.
The original deal for Spencer was two years, $4.5 million and fully guaranteed.
Spencer was a two-way guard with the Grizzlies, which meant he split time with the NBA and the NBA G League. The 6-foot-4 guard played in 25 games with one start as a rookie in Memphis.
He averaged 4.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 10.1 minutes, though he had a monster performance of 23 points and seven assists in 37 minutes in his lone start — and his last game of the season — against the Dallas Mavericks on April 13. Spencer shot 8-for-19 in that game, including 5-for-12 from three-point range.
For the season, Spencer shot 41.5% from the field, 36.5% from three-point range.
His debut in the NBA was delayed by a stress fracture in his right ankle developed during summer league play. Spencer also played in five games with Memphis’ G League team, the Hustle. He averaged 20.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 32.4 minutes with shooting splits of 48.5% (field goals), 43.9% (3-pointers) and 71.4% (free throws).
Spencer was originally drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the second round with the No. 53 pick.
Spencer played just one season with the Huskies, but he was a pivotal piece of their 2023-24 national championship team. He started all 40 games for the 37-3 Huskies and averaged 14.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.
He had eight games of 20 or more points during the season.
Spencer was named First-Team All-Big East and was also named to the 2024 Final Four All-Tournament Team.
He provided UConn with a very strong, confident personality that allowed him to grab hold of a leadership position with the Huskies despite only being there one season.
It also helped that he was one of the most dependable players in the country.
