Greg Byrne, the head coach of Alabama, wants the Crimson Tide to make it to the College Football Playoff.
After the 2024 regular season ended on Saturday, everyone in college football turned their attention to the first 12-team Playoff.
There were four teams in the Playoffs for ten years, and no two-loss teams ever made it to the top. Since there are 12 teams, one big question is whether a three-loss team can be in the same talk as a one-loss or two-loss team that hasn’t lost yet.
The Crimson Tide finished the regular season with a 9-3 record, so it may be hard for them to make the first 12-team cut. Due to its many amazing wins this season, Alabama has become the talk of the town as a team that might be able to get past the three-loss mark.
The sports director of Alabama, Greg Byrne, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday night to make his case for why his team is ready to compete for the Crimson Tide’s 19th National Championship title.
“Here’s a good look at the numbers/rankings for Alabama football,” said Byrne. “Be aware that there is a lot of talk about 2 vs. 3 loss teams, but that is only one factor. One of the first things that the College Football Playoff’s Selection Committee looks at is the strength of the teams that are in the running. Not every meeting and schedule is the same.
“We’ve worked diligently to add more challenging non-conference home-and-homes, which is good for college football, not to mention the week-in and week-out of the SEC and it being the toughest in the country.”
Greg Byrne, the athletic director at Alabama, made a pitch.
No. 2 in the percentage of games won against (.674)
No. 4 in the ESPN FPI
No. 4 in ESPN’s ratings of offence, defence, and special teams efficiency
No. 10 on ESPN’s list of strong records
Strength of Schedule from ESPN ranks No. 17
With three wins over teams ranked in the CFP Top 25,
Four wins over AP Top 25 teams that were ranked or getting votes at the time of the game
Six of the eight FBS wins have come against teams that could be in a bowl game.
Won four of their last five games to get ready for the playoffs.
Byrne, a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, is the second person from Alabama sports to make their case to the CFP committee on Monday. The first was left guard and co-captain Tyler Booker, who did the same thing this morning.
Along with Georgia (No. 7), South Carolina (15th), and Missouri (No. 21), Alabama has had one of the toughest schedules of the teams that are in the running for the College Football Playoff. However, the Tide has ranked wins over those teams. But losses to Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Oklahoma, which is ranked eighth right now, make the committee very confused.
The College Football Playoff results show on ESPN on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT will let us know if Alabama’s chances have gotten a little better.
