GOOD NEWS: Man City points deduction on English Premier League boost after table updated as it increases their chance of winning another Premier League title this season
Manchester City wants to win the Premier League for the fourth year in a row, and a recent change to the table may have helped them.
There seems to be a better chance for Manchester City to win another Premier League title this season now that Everton’s points loss penalty has been lowered.
Pep Guardiola’s team is trying to win a record-setting fourth straight title, but they are currently one point behind league leaders Liverpool. Arsenal is also one point behind them after 26 games. City will be hoping that Jurgen Klopp’s team makes a mistake before they play each other at Anfield on March 10. However, there is new hope that the league leader could change as soon as this weekend.
Next up for Liverpool is a match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. However, the results of their Merseyside neighbors could have a direct effect on how the game at the City Ground goes. The Premier League originally docked Everton 10 points for breaking the Profit and Sustainability Rules. This put the Blues in another fight to stay in the league.
The club did, however, appeal the decision, and on Monday, an independent review board said that Everton would lose only six points instead of ten. The Premier League told football.london that Everton FC appealed the punishment it received on nine grounds, all of which had to do with the punishment itself and not the fact that the club had broken the rules, which it accepted.
“The Appeal Board upheld two of those nine reasons, and rather than taking away 10 points, they took them away six.” The new punishment starts right away, and the Premier League table will be changed today to reflect this.
Because the appeal was only partly successful, Nottingham Forest dropped to 17th place in the league, with Everton moving ahead of them and Brentford taking over 15th place. With the new table, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team has dropped from a fairly safe spot to just above the relegation zone.
Forest will now be fighting for every point they can to stay in the Premier League. Their first game in this new role is on Saturday, when they host Liverpool. Last year, the Reds lost 1-0 at the City Ground, and City also lost two points at Forest on the road. It wasn’t a good place for Arsenal to hunt either. They lost 1-0 to Steve Cooper’s team there last season, ending their title chances.
The results from last season show that the City Ground is not an easy place to get a win. After Everton’s recent points recovery, City will be hoping that this will encourage Forest to take points from Liverpool, who are currently dealing with a squad full of young players who are recovering from injuries.
If Liverpool loses to Forest, who is fighting to stay in the league, Guardiola’s team will have the chance to move to the top of the table the next day when they play Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in what looks like it will be another exciting Manchester derby.
A week later, City will go to Anfield to play Liverpool in one of the most important games of the Premier League season. But if the defending champions can get to Merseyside ahead of their title rivals in the table, it will be because of Nottingham Forest and the motivation they got from Everton’s four-point deduction being reversed.
