Former Manchester United forward breaks Red Devils trainee’s record for most goals scored in Euro qualifying by surpassing Ronaldo.
A record for scoring goals for his country, established by David Healy, a former Manchester United trainee, has been surpassed.
Healy made his debut for Manchester United in 1999 and participated in three competitive games for the team. Before reaching new heights on the international scene with Northern Ireland in the mid-2000s, he continued to play in the Football League for the duration of his career.
In the run-up to Euro 2008, Healy broke the record for most goals scored in a European Championship qualifying campaign by scoring 13 goals in one season.
Robert Lewandowski tied this in 2016, but it hasn’t been surpassed until now, when a former Manchester United forward broke the record.
Romelu Lukaku, a former striker for Manchester United, now holds the record for most goals scored in a single European Championship qualification season.
Last night, Lukaku shattered the record in stunning fashion, leading Belgium to a 5-0 victory over an Azerbaijani team that had defeated Victor Lindelof’s Sweden 3-0 the week before. Lukaku scored four goals in the first half alone.
The Belgian, who is only thirty, has scored 79 goals for his country. With 128 and counting, Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for all time.
Lukaku was a member of the Manchester United team from 2017 to 2019. He currently plays for Roma under former Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho, and in 14 games this season, he has nine club goals.
In 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twelve goals in a European qualifying season for Portugal, only one goal shy of David Healy’s thirteen.
With just eight games played, Lukaku’s 14 goals is an amazing total. It’s a record that might be around for a while.
According to UEFA.com, the following is a list of the highest individual goal scoring records in individual qualifying campaigns since the competition’s start.
