Tony Barbee, the former head coach of the Auburn Tigers men’s basketball team, has passed away at the age of 55. The news of his untimely death was confirmed by Auburn University officials on April 3, 2025. Prior to becoming Auburn’s head coach, Barbee had a successful run at the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP), where he led the Miners to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. His coaching style emphasized defense and team play, a philosophy he carried with him to Auburn.

 

Before his time at UTEP, Barbee spent several years as an assistant coach under renowned head coach John Calipari at the University of Memphis, helping the Tigers to several successful seasons.
