Fabrizio Romano provides insight on who Xabi Alonso will chose to coach between Liverpool and Bayern Munich when Jurgen Klopp steps down
Febrizio Romano, a transfer expert, says that Liverpool and Bayern Munich “are obsessed with” Xabi Alonso as they look for new managers.
Jurgen Klopp said earlier this year that he would be leaving his job as manager of the Reds at the end of the season to take a break from football. This means that they need a new manager.
‘Obsessed’ with Alonso, Liverpool and Bayern, says Romano.
The oddsmakers still think that Alonso will replace Klopp at Anfield, but news from Germany says that the Spaniard will choose Bayern Munich if he leaves Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
As of now, Leverkusen hasn’t lost in the Bundesliga this season and is ten points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich with eight games left in the season.
If Liverpool can’t get Alonso, they do have other choices. The top three are Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon, Julian Nagelsmann from Germany, and Roberto de Zerbi from Brighton.
Earlier in the season, Romano said that Alonso decided to stop looking for work and focus only on the goal at Leverkusen.
Romano wrote in his Caught Offside piece, “Xabi Alonso’s only goal right now is to win three titles with Bayer Leverkusen, even though he has been linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich.” Alonso started to think about some options earlier in the season, and Leverkusen’s contract situation was being looked into. But for now, his only goal is to finish the season strongly.
“Right around December, everything changed. Leverkusen saw that they had a real chance to win the Bundesliga, which is all Alonso is thinking about.” The odds are now in their favor, and they will also be focusing on the Europa League. After that, we’ll decide what to do with him.
“I don’t think it will be easy to hear something new in March or April. Alonso is also under contract with Leverkusen, and there isn’t a clause that says he can’t leave this summer. This means that clubs will have to go there and deal, and no one wants to get in the way of that right now.
“I know that Liverpool and Bayern are crazy about Alonso and want to show him their plans, but it’s still too early to tell what he’ll decide.” It probably will rest on when they win the Bundesliga and how well they do in the Europa League as well.
Real Madrid is now interested in TAA, Romano said.
Reports say that Real Madrid wants to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold, so he might not stay at Liverpool for the time after Klopp leaves.
He could still stay at Anfield for many years, but Romano says there are no talks about a new deal, even though his current one ends in the summer of 2025.
Romano also asked, “We know Trent Alexander-Arnold is an important player for Liverpool, but how likely is it that he will sign a new deal when Real Madrid is interested?” There is a great bond between him and everyone at the club, so I’m sure Liverpool will do everything they can to keep him.
Still, Real Madrid is interested and is keeping an eye on things, but right now they haven’t talked to the player directly or anything like that. They are very aware of what’s going on, but it’s still early.
“It’s also important to note that Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool have not yet had a direct conversation about a new contract.” Real Madrid is keeping an eye on things because they know there isn’t a real deal being made. Once that is done, it will be important to see what happens with Michael Edwards under the new system and how these talks go.
