EXCLUSIVE: Roy Keane utterly perplexed by the combined Spain-England XI of Overlap.

The exasperation of Roy Keane at the theatrics of his fellow pundits during England games has been one of the highlights of the EURO 2024 TV watch.

Keane has been assigned to the ITV network for the duration of the tournament, where he will be joined by Gary Neville and Ian Wright to provide coverage of England.

Gareth Southgate’s team has endured a dramatic journey to the final, as they struggled through the group stages and appeared to be on the brink of a last-16 exit. However, a dramatic injury-time goal from Jude Bellingham reignited their momentum.

Following Ollie Watkins’ last-minute goal, they won the semi-final against the Netherlands in a similar manner on Wednesday. The videos of Roy Keane’s silently dejected reaction to both goals went viral on social media.

In addition to their responsibilities on ITV, Keane, Wright, and Neville have maintained their Stick to Football podcast with Sky Bet during the tournament, working alongside Jill Scott.

The predominantly English jury selected their combined XI from the two sides prior to the EURO 2024 final against Spain on Sunday. It goes without saying that the solitary Irish member of the panel was unimpressed by his colleagues’ Anglocentric choices.

It is perhaps not surprising that the triumvirate of pundits, along with Roy Keane, selected a combined team that was heavily populated by England players.

The final tally was seven English players to four Spanish players, with a number of selections that raised eyebrows.

Gary Neville’s assertion that the selections were based on players’ performance during the tournament thus far was even more perplexing, as it made a farce of the imbalance in selection.

Spain has demonstrated exceptional performance in nearly every game they have played thus far, while England’s performance against the Netherlands may be considered their most impressive of the summer.

It was equally unsurprising that Roy Keane appeared to be completely perplexed by the selection of his fellow commentators.

Keane’s confusion was immediately evident, as he silently gazed at Gary Neville when the de-facto host inquired about the number of English players who would be selected for the Spanish team.

In spite of Keane’s objections, Jordan Pickford was chosen as the custodian, and the Corkman would reluctantly concede (“just about”) that Kyle Walker would surpass Dani Carvajal (a highly controversial decision).

The Spanish duo of Aymeric Laporte and Marc Cucurella were selected to form the left half of the defence, with John Stones serving as the center-back.

Ian Wright was not permitted to argue for Declan Rice, as Keane was certain that Rodri and Fabian Ruiz were the undisputed choices for the basis of the midfield.

Keane simply sat back and announced that he was staying out of the discussion after the duo of Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka were suggested over the electric Spanish pair of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, making his feelings abundantly obvious.

Ultimately, Keane conceded and permitted Foden to be chosen, which was another highly questionable decision, given his subpar performance in contrast to Saka during this tournament.

Roy Keane looked reluctantly away from the panel as the tally reached seven English players by the conclusion. It was difficult not to relate to his amusement.

The final in Berlin is expected to be a thrilling event, and it will be clear which team has the most impressive lineup when they meet on Sunday night. Keane, Wright, and Neville will be on punditry duty on ITV from the Olympiastadion, and the match is scheduled to commence at 8 p.m. Irish time.
