There haven’t been many players in NBA history who have suited up for both the Celtics and the Lakers.
With both clubs playing at such a high level of competition right now, the most legendary rivalry in league history—and one of the greatest in American sports—keeps the flames of enmity alive.
The newest player to have a contract with both the Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies is Marcus Smart, a former guard with the Grizzlies.
Before being moved to the Grizzlies in 2023, the former Defensive Player of the Year spent nine seasons with the Celtics after being chosen. There he is, entangled with Boston’s archrival.
In his introductory press conference, Smart talked about what he expects from Celtics fans when they see him in a Lakers uniform.
The 31-year-old was a fan favorite in Boston, but that could change now that he’s across the country.

“I can try to anticipate it,” Smart said. “I have no idea, but I can definitely say that I’m expecting a lot of boos. I’m expecting a lot of hate, and it’s okay, I understand it.”
Smart averaged 10.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game with the Celtics, being a part of that memorable 2022 team that reached the NBA Finals.

He was not in Boston during the team’s 2024 run that ultimately ended in a championship, as he was involved in the trade that brought in Kristaps Porzingis.
