Everton Under 21s scored a gazillion goals.

This season, you can’t say that Paul Tait’s Everton Under 21s are boring. In the last three games, two ended in a 3-3 tie and one ended in a 2-4 loss. It’s good to see goals, but it’s a little scary that they let so much in at the back.

We’ve said many times that this is about growing young players, and the fact that the lineup has changed so many times in just those three games shows that. There was a different goalie for every game. Fraser Barnsley, George Pickford, and Zan-Luk Leban were all used.

The first game was a 3–3 draw at Ipswich in the Premier League Cup. After only 12 minutes, Martin Sherif scored for Chelsea after risky defense gave them the lead. That lead lasted for 20 minutes until Boatswain went home to help The Tractor Boys tie the game at 1. The next three goals came in a quick three minutes before halftime. Mendel-Idown saved a great run and finish from 18 yards out by Jacob Beaumont-Clark. 2-2 at halftime. There was a 12-minute wait before the Toffees scored again. Sherif finished off a great pass from Luke Butterfield. As the game went from end to end, Ipswich scored a goal a minute later to tie it up 3-3. Fraser Barnsley had to make a great save to keep the score tied.

That was followed by another 3-3 tie at home against Reading. This was the first of two straight games for first-team player Nathan Patterson. In the 18th minute, Charlie Whitaker picked off a pass just inside the other team’s half, ran to the edge of the penalty area, cut back, and hit a beautiful left-footed shot from 16 yards out into the far corner, giving Everton the lead.

In the 32nd minute, two players from the first team worked together to make it 2-0. Patterson sent in a great cross, and Harrison Armstrong headed it home with his huge head.

When Omari Benjamin was caught in the penalty area after 55 minutes, the lead grew to 3-0, which seemed impossible to lose. Whitaker scored a 3-0 goal with a beautiful panenka that took the goalie by surprise.

George scored a hat trick, bringing the score back to 3-3. The last goal came in the 90th minute, right after Armstrong was given a straight red card for a late tackle.

On the last and most recent occasion, the Blues lost a 0–4 lead away to Wolves before starting their own comeback with a great goal by Whitaker, assisted by Butterfield.

It ended 2-4 after Whitaker scored again after Jacob Beaumont-Clark made a great turn and pass.

It’s clear that the young Blues need to work on their defense, but these games have been exciting and show that they can score goals.
