Erik ten Hag talks about why Manchester United isn’t scoring anymore.

Given the current state of the season, Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa was a good result. Keeping a clean sheet was especially nice after giving up three goals in back-to-back games against Tottenham Hotspur and Porto. But United also couldn’t score for the fourth time in five league games.

Even though they scored three goals against Southampton, United has only scored in three of their seven league games.

“That will happen. Ten Hag was asked about the lack of goals during his press conference at Villa Park after the game. “There are more reasons than not being good enough,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s the form,” he said. Radek Hojlund is still getting used to the season, so he isn’t fully fit for a match yet. Also, he scores our goals—I’d even say our best forward scores goals. We know some of them, like Marcus Rashford, can score goals, too. But he scored and set up a good goal in Porto, and he made two great chances against Villa.

“I believe [Alejandro] Garnacho has been a threat all season, hitting goals and setting them up. Bruno Fernandes has the skill to score goals.

“The players are trusted, and we’ll get there.” It will work one day.”

Ten Hag said before the game against Tottenham that he would only be concerned about not scoring goals if his team stopped making chances. The problem hasn’t been as bad in competitions other than the Premier League. Eleven goals were scored in three games against Barnsley, FC Twente, and Porto.

Rashford and Garnacho have each scored four goals in all competitions, while Christian Eriksen has scored three. Last season, Hojlund scored 16 goals. In Porto, he scored his first of the season after a good link-up with Rashford. He started the move by winning a header in the middle of the field.

Fernandes has scored 10 or more goals every season since he joined United, but he hasn’t scored yet this season. Joshua Zirkzee has also had trouble adding to the goal he scored on his debut in early August.
