Manchester City lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United because Pep Guardiola said they were “a little bit hungover.”
When they played their local foes at Wembley at the end of last season, the Etihad team was a heavy favorite to keep the title. Their goal was to become the first team to keep both titles, but Erik ten Hag’s team beat them in the capital.
Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored goals in the first half that were enough for United to win 2-1, even though City kept pressing in the second half. Guardiola’s team had made history with their second straight Premier League win just six days before the game at Wembley.
They enjoyed their victory on the last day, making history by becoming the first team to win it four times in a row. On the day of the game at Wembley, Guardiola didn’t give many reasons, but now he says his team was drunk after their first loss of the season at Tottenham.
“This is the news!” the Catalan said. “Not that we lost, but how long it’s been since we lost.” We were a little tipsy after the FA Cup final, but it’s good news.
Guardiola agreed that the loss was his fault and said, “It’s my mistake; the game plan wasn’t good.” The players know why it’s true. That was not a good move. I thought things were not going to go well today. It’s as simple as that: you planned a game for different places, but it didn’t work.
The City manager also said, “You win and lose in life and in football.” They didn’t give up and kept going, so we lost in the right way, especially in the second half.
Many people thought that Ten Hag’s job was safe after the Red Devils’ win. The team placed eighth in the league, and the Dutchman was blamed for it. There were rumors that he would be fired. But with Sir Jim Ratcliffe there, the favorites pulled off a surprise.
That win only put off what was going to happen anyway; Ten Hag was fired earlier this week after a bad start to the season. It wasn’t long ago that the club’s former boss would defend himself by saying that he had won trophies in both of his seasons in charge.
