Chelsea confident to sign Bundesliga star for Enzo Maresca
In less than a year, the Canadian’s contract with Bayern will expire.
Graeme Bailey, a journalist, reports that Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in acquiring Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies this summer.
According to the report, the two Premier League clubs are monitoring the Canadian during the impending transfer window; however, he may have a higher priority elsewhere.
As his final contract year approaches, Davies may be transferred this summer, as the Bavarians will not allow the Champions League champion to depart for free the following season.
Both Manchester City and Chelsea are reportedly “longtime admirers” of Davies, as they are both eager to acquire a left-sided defender in the upcoming transfer window.
Josko Gvardiol, a center-back, filled in at left-back for City during the previous season, whereas Ben Chilwell, a standout for Chelsea, was sidelined by multiple injuries and appeared in just 13 league games.
Bailey reports that Davies is ‘determined’ to join Real Madrid this summer, notwithstanding the English powerhouses’ interest.
Nevertheless, in the upcoming transfer window, the Spanish champions might be unwilling to meet Bayern’s demands for the Canadian, whom BT analyst Rio Ferdinand compared to “Usain Bolt of football.”
According to Spanish reports, Real Madrid are willing to pay “minimal” compensation for Davies and could offer approximately £30 million.
Carlo Ancelotti’s squad may not be overly motivated to recruit Davies in the coming months, given that Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia already occupy the left-back positions.
If Madrid are unable to pay the asking price for the left-back, who was the fastest in the Bundesliga in 2023-24, this summer, Manchester City and Chelsea could very well have a legitimate chance at signing Davies, who Owen Hargreaves described as “terrifying” when he charged defenders.
Since his transfer from Vancouver Whitecaps to Bayern in 2019, the 23-year-old has solidified his position as one of the preeminent left-sided defenders globally.
To date, Davies has appeared in 195 games for Bayern, contributing to 31 goals and 11 assists. His contribution to the club’s 2020 Champions League triumph was crucial, and he operated at the behest of manager Hansi Flick.
Fabrizio Romano indicated in his Daily Briefing that Chelsea will have a busy summer due to the impending appointment of Enzo Maresca as their new manager.
Five new players are on the Blues’ to-do list for the forthcoming transfer window, as they seek to acquire a goalkeeper, central defender, winger, and striker.
Romano asserts that Maresca “will be involved” in Chelsea’s summer spending binge, less than two years after becoming the club’s fifth different manager.
Chelsea, led by part-owner Todd Boehly, have spent more than £1 billion on new signings in just over two years, and they have no intention of halting anytime soon.
However, in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, the Blues will reportedly be prepared to sell players, as both Conor Gallagher and Trevor Chalobah are rumored to be leaving.
